Ghouls
Normally, ghouls are completely indistinguishable to the eye from humans. They have the same outer appearance and intelligence, and age at the same rate. However, they are only able to derive nutrients from humans and aside from water, coffee, and human flesh, they are unable to digest anything. Human food tastes disgusting to them, causes them to vomit, and actually weakens their physical abilities. Extreme hunger causes very painful headaches and loss of all reason in ghouls, leading a hungry ghoul to be driven by instinct alone. Although they can survive on one or two dead bodies a month, some ghouls kill and eat for pleasure.
There still are many differences between ghouls and humans, however: ghouls are extremely strong and can jump several meters high or penetrate a human's body with their bare hands. They cannot be hurt by human weapons (unless hit in the eyes) and heal extremely quickly as long as they have a reliable food supply.
Anteiku
Anteiku is a coffee shop run by peace-loving ghouls. They gather the bodies of humans who have committed suicide and distribute them to ghoul who either cannot or do not wish to hunt humans.
Kagune
Ghouls mainly fight with biological weapons called Kagune. Kagune form from organs known as kakuhou and can take the shape of wings, claws, tails, etc. Kagune can hurt both ghouls and humans.
Kagune types:
Ukaku: Grow from the shoulders and spread out like feathers. Quick and suitable for long- and short-range attacks, but decrease stamina rapidly. Effective against Bikaku.
Koukaku: Grow from below the shoulder blade and typically wrap around the arm. Metallic, strong, and good for defense, but slow and hard to wield. Effective against Ukaku.
Rinkaku: Grow from the back in the waist area, often as scaled claws or tentacles. Regenerate quickly and excel in brute strength, but extremely brittle and break easily. Effective against Koukaku.
Bikaku: Grow from the tailbone, often in the shape of a tail. Good for medium-distance, well-rounded, and has no glaring weaknesses or strengths. Effective against Rinkaku.
Kakujya
A kakujya (shining one) is a type of ghoul that goes through a special transformation after repeatedly cannibalizing other ghouls. Ghouls need to absorb nutrients called RC cells, that flow like blood within both humans and ghouls. Through cannibalism, a ghoul intakes RC cells, increasing their body's concentration. If their concentration becomes high enough, it may trigger a mutation within the ghoul. This mutation gives them amplified strength, diverse abilities and a new special kagune, obtained only by kakujyas. This kagune clads the ghoul's body and functions like armor, making the ghoul especially hard to fight.
Ghouls usually turn to cannibalism when there is an increased amount of ghouls in a ward, because of a lack of "food" and turf wars. Many kakujyas tend to lose their mind when fighting with the kakujya kagune, and it is unknown as to how a handful of them have gained control over it.
