This was his last resort. Mir didn't know if the rumours were true but, knowing those advisors, the likelihood was that they were. He had tried to keep to his promise, knowing how much she'd hate what he was about to propose. But she was his last option - his last hope. And she could hate him all she wanted; as long as he could save the kingdom.
Mir took a deep breath as he climbed off his horse just outside her estate. She would probably laugh at him and think this was all a joke. He had never been so nervous to see his best friend in all his life.
Rubbing his sweaty palms together, Mir tied up his horse and hurried down the path towards her front door. He didn't waste any time knocking on the door - her servants were probably used to him walking in without invitation by now - and flung it open, peering inside.
"Hye!" He called, stepping into the entrance hall. "Hye, it's important! Don't start playing hide and seek with me!" His joke died in his throat as his nerves took over, closing the front door behind him and ignoring the startled looks of nearby, young maids. "I...I have to talk to you about something." He took a breath before stepping further into her house, knowing exactly where she'd be.
Mir knocked on the door before opening it up to reveal her bedroom. "Hye," he whispered, seeing her sitting startled on the bed. Of course, she hadn't heard him come in. Like always. What had he expected?
Stepping into the room and closing the door as quietly as possible behind him, Mir opened his mouth to speak before she even had time to bound up and hug him. "It's the kingdom. She needs you." He paused before his pleading eyes landed on hers. "I need you."
Hyelim had promised herself she would never be standing here. She had made up her mind the moment she had heard the news. She couldn’t be queen. She wasn’t ready.
But if Mir trusted her, then what was there for her to fear. He would be there if she ever hesitated or needed advice. He had promised he’d keep her safe.
So, there she stood in the grand throne room, dressed in a dress worthy of nobility, nobility that she soon enough would be joining. She could feel the eyes of the other people in the room staring at her. If it weren’t for Mir standing by the throne with a supportive smile she would have been running out of there. Instead, she slowly began walking towards the throne, her heart beating a mile minute.
An older man stood by the throne, a golden crown resting in his hands. His expression was not one that mirrored that of the others around him.
“It is my honor today,” the man spoke, his voice echoing loudly through the room. “To present to you all the true successor to our throne.”
Hyelim could feel their eyes on her as she began stepping up towards the throne.
“Kim Hyelim, cousin of our late King Kim Seokjin,” the man announced as Hyelim sat down in the massive chair. Her eyes gazed out over the gathered crowd. As she felt the heavy crown lowered onto her head she glanced over at Mir, feeling a spur of panic. But he was still smiling, giving her a reassuring nod of his head.
