The sun was setting at the horizon, painting the Oceanside docks a deep orange hue. The sound of water sloshing against the wooden beams mixed with the sound of seagull cries and the whistle of the wind in the distance. A ship was slowly easing into port, its dark hull hidden in the setting fog. The song of its crew echoed out over the water, deep rumbling voices rolling with the waves. From the mast hung a black flag, dancing with the gentle touch of the wind.

 

 

“Get the sails down, men! Swift and silent!” A single voice rung out strong over the others, halting the song. The only sounds audible out on the docks was the wooden thump of a landing ramp hitting the pier and shuffling feet as the crew moved off the boat and towards the city. 

 

But they would not go unnoticed. Some of the men had taken to a pub near the outskirts of town, talking loudly amongst themselves over their mugs of ale. People would stare at them and whisper, no one daring to speak up. These men were strangers, who knew what they were capable.

 

It wasn’t until the pub had burst into violence, spurred up by the mysterious men, that the kingdom took to notice. By the time guards had been sent to apprehend the men, the pub had burned down, several people killed within the roaring flames.

 

This was more than a friendly visit.

 

It was an invasion.
