i put a lot of thought into this question, and at the various stages of exploring this question i came to many conclusions, most of which i now realize are wrong. but there's one answer that seems the most correct explanation
rps don't last, because there are so many rps.
people look at rps because the plot seems interesting, initially, they like the story or the premise of the rp. and then people join because they like the environment of the rp, the way other characters interact, other rp'ers speak with each other ooc. and people stay, because of the friendships they form, the way other rp'ers make them feel and the way other characters make their character feel. and people leave because the rp dynamic changes (on a wider scale: new people that have different views and interest and don't click with them, or on a smaller scale: their friends make new friends and don't interact with them, or their characters get in a relationship and don't have time for their characters).
and rpr is not a small community anymore, there are hundreds of active users on the site and active rps on the site, so people leave and they don't have to look back, they can repeat the process of looking joining associating and leaving over again in different rps. they will never run out of rps to join, so there is no need to hold on to a character in an rp if they're not satisfied.
in real life we have one life, we live it to the best of our abilities and try to make things work out in our favor because we can't just quit and start a new life. but for our characters that's not the case and i think every rp'er enjoys that, if something isn't making your character satisfied you can leave it and find something different or better.
of course there are exceptions to this, there are rps that last for months or even years. but its not without increased effort of the admins. and the dedication of their ooc friends into maintaining that.
most rps will always have a lifespan of 3 weeks to 3 months, because that's when people truly get to know others and things are no longer new and exciting, opinions form and divides are created.
