Humans
Lifespan - 80-100 years
The legends say that over a millennia ago, three primordial deities were slain, their blood falling upon the earth. From the land sprouted forth a race of mutant, almost hairless monkeys with an intelligence that was more advanced than the gods had seen before. They named these beings 'humans' and as they grew and evolved into a society, they took over the world, quickly becoming the most dominant species whilst also being oblivious to a number of the other beings on the earth. Now not only have they explored the land but the seas as well, with many of them adapting to a nautical life.
Humans are one of the shorter-lived races, although it is easier for them to reproduce at a faster rate than the longer-lived races.
Mer
Lifespan - 400 years
The blood that fell into the seas created the Mer. They naturally appear as a humanoid with their legs replaced with the lower half of a sea animal, from fish to octopi to seahorses, Mer aren't exclusively fish. Mers also aren't exactly renowned to be nice, with many legends of them luring lustful sailors to their deaths with their mesmerising voices.
It is believed that Mers have four forms, two ocean forms, and then those forms on land. On land their lower half will be replaced with human legs, though the older the Mer, the more convincingly human their legs are. Up until the age of one hundred the Mer's human legs will be covered in scales, in intricate patterns all over them.
Aside from the differences between their land and ocean forms, their two ocean forms can be categorised two ways. One is how they attract sailors and pirates, one is how they kill them...
Sirens
Lifespan - 300 years
Finally, the blood that sprayed into the sky created the Sirens. Mostly human with bird wings and claws on their feet. Sirens are mostly known for their enchanting voices combined with their voracious appetites. They are believed to feel every emotion strongly and have less impulse control than a regular human. Most sirens are musically inclined and can be found at lots of parties. Though not true, many sailors believe that Sirens are the ones that carry the souls of the dead to their final resting place, and as such, they leave offerings for the Sirens.
More recently Sirens have found ways to disguise themselves and join a variety of crews, often assuming a protector role to ward off any other Sirens. Younger Sirens may struggle with this magic and have scaley legs or feathered backs that they attempt to hide other ways, while Older Sirens (50+) are usually able to hide everything without issue.
Vampires
Lifespan - Unknown (most go insane and die before they turn 2000 years of age)
Vampires originated when a human angered the blood god, believing that blood was a pointless substance and performing rudimentary experiments based on bloodletting. The god cursed the man, forcing him to live as a being that couldn't walk in the light and required the consumption of blood to survive. Over the thousands of years since then, Vampires have evolved slightly. They can be seen in sunlight but will be in a weakened state and will tire and become hungry at a much quicker rate. They still required blood to survive, and two months without feeding is enough to kill a vampire, with six weeks weakening them enough to the point where sunlight will kill them.
They are stronger and faster than the average human, but can also be killed with a stake to the heart, decapitation, or the ingestion of Vervain. Vervain is a useful herb to keep vampires at bay, it's smell being strong enough to warn even the strongest vampires to keep a distance.
Weres
Lifespan - 200 years
Once the vampires started to grow in numbers, the blood god realised what sort of mistake he'd made. Uncertain of how to deal with his actions, he approached the Moon Goddess and asked for her help. The Moon Goddess looked at her followers and blessed them, so that when she was most powerful, they would change into a beast form. Over time, the Weres gained strength and were able to turn into a weaker version of their beast form on any night, as long as the moon was in the sky. although this could be a very painful and taxing process that risked leaving the Were victim to madness.
Weres are not limited to wolves, but each Were will only have one beast that they can change into. They can change any night other than a new moon, although the closer to the full moon that they shift, the less painful and risky the shift will be.
Having been made to combat the vampire threat, most Weres have an ingrained hatred for vampires.
