Research

Before you can write an Essay for any class subject, you have to Google the topic or even more, look up the books on the subject to write a paper on it.

Writing a fanfic works in the same fashion. We must know the theme, topic, or even more the events within the fanfic thick and through to properly right it. You don't want those bad comments that were put on E.L James do for not knowing how actually works, do you?

If you are just thinking like 'I want to write a new story or a story at all'. You can write on something you already know about or be different, learn something new and present it in your writing.

Let's say you want to write a fanfic on a vampire, I strongly suggest you actually look up the the past about Vampires. Don't just settle on what people here and TV feeds you. Do you know where they actually started and began? Was it before Dracula or after? You have to think outside the box sometimes, no all the time.

We have the internet here. It's best to go read on Wikipedia first, blogs or even find related books online. (Yes, nothing in this world is 100 percent fact. Not even paterinty tests are a 100. It's about getting the idea and twisting for a story that isn't true itself. We should relay on our creativity, unless you are writing non-fiction) For example in my fanfic Cigars On Ice my character has borderline personality and other disorders. I just don't go by what I just read on some WebMD, but go read the books. Learn what they go through perfectly, be it the struggle or even the imperfection. Sure it takes some time, but when you get the depth of your story you can convey the emotions more properly as well, which is what I will explain next time: The Emotion

You can't always rely on Wikipedia. Everyone and anyone can edit the form and fill it up with no facts whatsoever. Reading a book related to your chosen topic is the best way to go.

In general, I agree with this.
But "first read on Wikipedia" is not always the best tip xD
There is a lot of crap on wikipedia actually haha

My vampires were so poorly written that I cringe whenever I think about the old stories I used to write. Like ghosts for example: I thought ghosts/spirits were written like how TV and movies portrayed them but after watching real documentary shows like A Haunting and Ghost Adventures my knowledge increased somewhat more on the paranormal. At least I hope it has.

Same for scenes. My scenes were AWFUL (and not as good still) but I am working on it so I can write it properly and realistically.

Research is super beneficial when you're writing something you know nothing about. Even if a person thinks they know everything, it never hurts to do more searching ^^ One may find something they never knew about.

I honestly couldn't agree more with this! When I was younger and wanted to write a vampire story I researched the hell out of vampires and read vampires books. Earlier in the year when I wanted to imporve my t writing bu making a t story I did some research on . Asked my friends a bunch of questions and even used my own experience (which is ver limited because # for days) and also when I wrote a story where the character was pregnant I researched that too. Ppl plssss research your , cuz I've seen and read some stupid stuff because they had no clue what they were talking about.
