Cliche 2.0

What K-Drama doesn't have that shy, cute girl or those ones doing aegyo all the time? Come on, every manga I've about read even has them! ; A ;

It's bound to get boring at some point when you have a new face, acting like the old face you just finished watching. We humans get bored easily. Keep this in mind.

New Face = New Personality

New Story = New Character Personalities

Even celebrities change over time, because they know their style is getting old(overused).

Ex. G-Dragon(Fans say his music has changed to a dark/swag set of mind instead the sentimental and original hip hop he did in the past) or even Beyonce(Sasha Fierce and now Yonce).

(O.O You see what I did there?!)

Not only the story has to be unique, but your characters as well. The characters in your story may or may not be an Idol, but in a matter of sense they are the star of your story! You must make them shiiiiine!

Then again, they could be weird like our bae Kyungsoo~

In simpler words, your main characters should be unique and different, be it in a glamorous, dark, bad , cute or even evil way.

To make this even more understandable, I will state the different types of female characters I have seen in fanfics and kdrama's.

1. Cute

2. y

3. Bad

4. Evil

5. Nerdy

6.

7. Damsel In Distress

Now for the males

1.

2. Hero

3. Nerd

4. Mr. Arrogant

5. Too Rich For Yo Po Azz

6. Narcissist

7. Mr. Perfect

8. Shy/Cute(Rarely see this, usually the one that loses da gurl)

----------

Now, now I'm sure you are thinking, 'If I don't use these types what else is left?'

I'm not telling you can't use them. In fact you can use them. I even use them.

Fanfics Ex's:

Controversy G-Dragon: Hero/ (More toward a fake hero)

ControversyPark Bom: Cute/Damsel In Distress/ Slightly Bad

Exotic Nights Kai & Sehun: -> Hero

Exotic Nights Mayuko: Cute/Damsel In Distress

Cigars On Ice Kai: , Mr. Arrogant, Narcissist, Too Rich For Yo Po Azz, Mr. Perfect, and a Hero. (Ha, MY KAI IS THE PACKAGE)

Cigars On Ice Ashley: y, Bad , (Addition: )

But, for example, lets say you pick male number five. Do you really stop there? Are you going to just write about thirty chapters about Too Rich For Yo Po Azz acting like stuck up snob and then he suddenly becomes Rich For Both Our Azzez?

Or...lets say you pick female number three, are you going to have it where she just goes around being stubborn, being a big bad wolf who spits out curse words and throw fists when she doesn't get her way or when someone threatens her?

This is where you have made your character the average, cliche because there are many more out there just like that.

1....2...3....1,000...2,000...yeah...there's about that many

Now, bust through the box and jump out to the universe, crossing a boundary we've been kept in for too long.

We are now in the creative universe that turned out to just be reality, a place that we are too familiar with. Simply because we know everything about this world, we can make short cuts and invent faster ways to travel.

It's life. It's us.

You see, it's not that hard once you actually start to think. Actually, it's quite simple once you are guided.

To create a character, we must look at ourselves and others.

Do we have a habit of biting our fingernails till they are nubby? Do we fear god? Do we even believe in God? Do we eat our food in less than five minutes 'sloppily' or take a complete hour to be 'perfect'? Do we feel guilt when we lie or do we lie too easily and then laugh when we succeed? Do we have morals or live the life of Sodom and Gomorrah? Do we have habits of talking to ourselves like we have three people inside of our head, one of them being super ego?

Did our past make us like this? Where were our parents? What did they do?

Are we vegans or are we junk food eaters? Do we judge others when we past them in hallway? Do we notice the smallest detail of a leaf falling from a birds feet when they take off for the sky? Are we articulate in our speech or lazy in the tongue like Kris?

Do we work hard like GD or stay in bed for hours like our lovely Jessica Jung?

Do we smile despite being sad? Do we laugh when other people laugh at something mean or do we help that person when everyone isn't looking?

Are we a leader or are we the evil maknae? Do you know your weaknesses? Do you know your strengths. Can you admit to that? Will change when needed?

These aren't the only questions we ask ourselves, but our characters also. We must know are characters better than anyone else and how they do something so little or so big that makes them different from other people, just like how we are different from others.

That is when you have not made a cliche character, but a character painted in it's own colors just as all humanity is. We are all distinct and different from the idealistic views such as cute, cold, , narcissist and much more. It's up to you to choose which one is the most interesting and even more unlike any other. Don't be cliche. Be different.

I see where you were going with this, but to be honest, while I would agree that cliche scenes that we see over and over in fics and dramas and sentences (such as head over heals, took an eternity, etc.) should be avoided, I think there's an important distinction that should be made as well: a trope.

Reoccurring cliches, motifs, and themes that appear in fanfics, books, and dramas can be considered a trope. For example, one might say that the recent YA trend of Dystopian novels (the Divergent series, the Hunger Games, the Testing series) are all cliche at this point because they have been so over used. However, I think what keeps them from actually being cliche, and what can keep your fanfic from being cliche, is making it unique in your own way (which I think you touched on a bit, but not in the way I'm trying to convey) and keeping within the trope without making carbon copies of what you've already written/watched/etc.

What I'm trying to say by bringing up tropes is that I think the problem doesn't really lie in the cliches themselves, but rather the underdevelopment of the characters and I like that you got into that in depth towards the end. I could read the same plotline a couple times, but if there is new life injected in the characters (say in plot A, rich boy is a because his dad's a big businessman, but is secretly a little when it comes to snakes, and in plot B, rich boy is a because his dad's a big businessman, but actually visits his grandma in the nursing home every single weekend) then the story can still be interesting and can be enjoyable to read.

So, yeah. TLDR; Develop the shieetttt out of your characters xD
