Minki is born in New York City but had moved to Beijing with his father when he was around 7 years old due to some personal issues they had and the fact that his father was offered a better position at a large hospital in the country. His mother had passed away the year before from health issues she had and refused to take had medication for it, though Minki wasn't affected by it. He had begun to enter many singing and dancing competitions when he was 9, with the support of his close friends before going onto international competitions the next year. When he was 12 years old, he had lost his best friend to lung cancer and was devastated by it but it had no effect on him wanting to perform on stage. The next year, he had lost his father to suicide and he stopped performing on stage a month later for a while, which he didn't mind at all.

About a month after moving to Beijing, Minki had begun to take judo classes and competed in national and local competions a year later. He had enjoyed judo very much and had excelled in it very easily, outclassing the people that had been there for years within months of joining. He had won a majority of the competitions he had entered. After the passing of his father, Minki became more focused on judo and didn't compete in singing and dancing competitions until early next year and had changed everything about himself.

Minki is mature for his age, though he does tend to act his age on very few occations and off camera, and doesn't freely talk his parents. He has an older sister, who is an actress, and an older brother, who was an underground artist. He takes after his mother more than his father both personality wise and look wise and is someimes often mistaken as a female.
