Junsu, nicknamed Xia, was born to an air affinity mother from a "proper" family, and a fire affinity father that proved to be an uptight Romeo to her Juliet. Unlike the sword fights, thumb biting, and teenager death of Shakespeare's original vision, Junsu's mother and father ended up ostracized from their own families and lived rigid, compartmentalized lives. Whatever passion his parents had for each other, as tepid as it was, meant that Junsu was deprived of parental affection as a child. His upbringing also means that physical affection is an alien concept to him.
As an adolescent, Junsu was sent away to a boarding school; his twin brother, on the other hand, was allowed to remain at home. When Junsu questioned the decision, the only explanation he was given was a "he's an alpha" from his father. At the time, Junsu had no idea what his father had meant, so he obeyed without any other question. It was only a few months after he arrived in the strange, new place, that Junsu went through his first heat. He felt ill, and with no one he trusted to speak to, he withdrew during his heat. When his classmates next saw him, he was teased over his status by those he had considered to be acquaintances, and so he felt even more isolated from others.
It wasn't until Junsu was a legal adult that he finally understood what he was, and what his frequent illness meant. He had met a fellow wolf, some years older than himself, during a summer away from the boarding school. The older wolf took care of Junsu during his heat, and he told him that he would continue to go through it for years. Despite the fact he had become a sort of mentor for Junsu, the older wolf didn't instruct him on how to do more than ease his discomfort. What he did learn from his mentor, however, was that he wanted nothing more than to be able to take care of others.
Though his desire to be a caretaker is strong, Junsu's inability to connect with others physically meant he was never cut out for any of the fields that he would find more fulfilling. Instead, the isolated young man found he had a rich imagination, and the kind of tenuous grasp on sanity that makes for a decent author. Eventually, as he got older, his creativity became muddled by his self-medicating to deal with his heat, and what education he did have meant that he had just enough in him to be able to teach others—just as long as he manages to avoid any too curious or over eager students in his class.
