"If my country shall die, I shall die with it." These were the words that the royal soldiers in Hyrule Castle swore to and lived by every day. It was some mission statement invented by the king from long ago, and it must have been his way to keep knights sworn to the kingdom from deserting at the last second. Chansik's father would always drive these words into Chansik's head. "If the kingdom falls, and you stand because you fled," His father would say while on the training grounds with Chansik, "How would you ever know that you might have saved the kingdom if you stayed? You'd have to live with that guilt for the rest of your days."

And Chansik was currently living with that guilt. He didn't flee immediately when things got bad. The Calamity started to show itself, and Chansik kept a brave face. He stood with his father on the battlefield, and he watched as his father's life was taken before his eyes. The old man had shouted at Chansik, commanding his son not to flee. No matter what. For his last promise to his father, Chansik swore that he wouldn't flee. If the country was going to fall to the hands of the Calamity, then so was he.

That promise was easier made than kept. As Chansik watched more and more soldiers lose their lives, and defeat seemed more certain for Hyrule Kingdom, Chansik chickened out and fled from the castle. It was Chansik's original intention to flee from the country completely. He wanted to hop on a boat and sail across the vast ocean, looking for another kingdom to land in and swear fealty to. Before he was able to make it out of Goponga Village, news roared throughout the lands that the Hylian Champian had fallen, and the Princess has been locked away in the castle to seal away the power of Calamity Ganon. It almost seemed like peace would be coming upon the kingdom once again, and Chansik finally had time to think about the choices that had led him to his current situation.

That's when he decided that he wouldn't flee to another kingdom, but stay here in Hyrule and protect the civilization that there was left. Disaster and distruction was sure to still be upon the kingdom, and it was Chansik's job, as one of the few surviving soldiers, if not the only surviving soldier, to protect what was left of it.
