beauty isn't everything,
but yang hongseok begs to differ.
born and raised during the reign of queen jinseong in the later silla perido of korea (668-935), it was only to hongseok's (birth name: gim weonseong) horror that he wasn't born with the beauty and grace that described the dynasty. what's worse, his family was one of the esteemed and wealthy during this time. his father was a minister, his older brother a scholar - and to have someone in the family who was as unsightly as him was...quite a disgrace.
truthfully, it was a mistake to name him before he was even born. his mother nearly died of a heart attack seeing his son with a huge birthmark on his face and she declared that 'he wasn't worthy of a king's name.' who would ever want to taint a royalty's name, after all? surely not her, a politician's wife, but what's done was done and weonseong had to live his life as minister gim's unspoken son because of the 'tragedy' his face has caused.
to say that his family was ashamed of him was an understatement, hence, weonseong lived most of his life sheltered (ironically so because he was neither female nor was he beautiful, which were usually the criteria of being a shut-in child back in the day). he lived a different life from all the other wealthy boys. instead of going to school, his family hired scholars who taught him how to read and write. instead of playing in the courtyard with the neighborhood kids, he was stuck in his room, either fiddling with trinkets made by the female servants or playing yunnori with the males in the house. he couldn't freely roam the streets of silla without a guard or two. his face should also be obscured; the young boy often wore a silken chiffon fabric beneath his cap and over his face.
the boy, at first, was contented with his life; the servants loved him even though his family didn't. unfortunately and inevitably, weonseong had to grow into the marrying age. he knew, then, that no one would want to marry him due to his face even if his family was wealthy enough to pay for a dowry. true to this assumption, all of the minister's daughters had immediately refused proposals from his family because of fear, thinking that the unspoken son must have been cursed at birth for the minister to not want to reveal his identity to anyone before the marriage was to be consummated.
thus began weonseong's descent to madness.
not receiving his family's love and recognition was okay; he had supportive servants by his side, after all. however, unable to love just because he was ugly did not sit well with him. he finally came to understand the truth about people: they were superficial. weonseong, therefore, did what he could - he employed skin care like how the daughters of noblemen would, sought the consult of a healer to remove the hideous blemish on his face, used make-up as a cover up instead of the silken mask he always wore. but none of those ever worked. the birthmark on his face haunted him whenever he stared at a mirror.
weonseong came to the conclusion that, perhaps, a shaman could help him.
he didn't know what went wrong. maybe the shaman he hired was a fake or maybe he just wasn't born under his lucky star, because the next thing he knew, it was a demon that appeared before him (not one of those deities the shaman was allegedly good at contacting). weonseong knew of stories of demons who had granted wishes with things in return but not this one - the demon was willing to let him go after granting him what he wants: eternal beauty.
weonseong knew he shouldn't have trusted the demon but he finally got what he wanted. the man's face became clear, his nose considerably better, lips plumper, eyes brighter - he looked and felt fantastic. his family didn't know what had happened to him and he didn't tell them either. besides, the shaman was dead, her body probably overwhelmed by the demonic power that came to possess her that night. rumors of voodoo and other unearthly deeds sprang up because of his sudden appearance in public but he paid neither of them any heed. the noble, instead, reveled in the jealous stares of men and women alike (tbc).

PERSONALITY
(as copy pasted from a private message, will be edited soon)
hongseok is stubborn, he works in it mainly because he'd rather take a million photos of himself and post on instagram rather than doing substantial work. he's a - lowkey - because he likes to know he can pick up people based on his good looks. he gets insulted when people judge his look sso he gets aggressive about things and would gladly educate you a thing or two about how he became like this, how his face was one of a kind, and that wow, even if he died and went to hell, beauty doesn't fade despite the myths etc. he won't admit to having an ugly demonic form, however.
good things about him - smart, organized, cleanliness, eats vegetables (mainly used as a facade though; would post pictures of them but would rather eat junk on any good day), makes great coffee, actually gives great dating/beauty advice.
basically, hongseok is a head who's really vain and his starters in every conversation are about himself or anything about aesthetics and beauty.
special skills : partial omniscience, shapeshifting (limited to living things), dimensional travel/manipulation
