Byun Baekhyun was born the illegitimate child of a wealthy stockbroker, his mother a struggling makeup artist. Growing up, Baekhyun's parents tried their best to shield him from the world outside the front door, in which he was labeled "unwanted, a bastard child." Although his father was often absent from their home, he did try his best to be present in his son's life, taking many "business trips" to escape his first, more important (as Baekhyun bitterly recalls) family. Even as a young child, although having not fully understood the situation, Baekhyun knew already that he and his mother were second in his father's life. However, for the short time that his father could come around, their sad family felt, strangely, normal. 

It was not until his father died that he met his half-family. Up until then, he had absolutely no clue who or what they were; his father had pretended in his presence that he was his one and only. When he was ten years old, his father had suffered a fatal heart attack. As he laid in the hospital bed, quivering upon the bed of death, Baekhyun found himself face-to-face with his sisters. Although he had never even been told their names, they knew everything: at thirteen and ten, his half-sisters knew about the affair, the broken home, and him.

After that unfortunate event, all traces of his father disappeared except for the sum of money left in his name, untouchable before he turned eighteen. His half-sisters and their mother cut all contact with them. For that time, it was only his mother he had to rely on. For a short while, at least.

Two weeks after his fifteenth birthday, his mother was diagnosed with Stage Three lung cancer. Ten months later, she passed away, leaving Baekhyun alone and unsure of how to tackle all the obstacles in front of him. His entire life, her mother had been the only constant in his life, but now, she was gone.  After the death of his mother, at age fourteen, Baekhyun was adopted by his aunt, his mother's younger sister. In that moment, Baekhyun feared that no one would want him. Not only was he an illegitimate child, but he had nothing to bring: no money, no skills, nothing. He was endlessly thankful to his aunt for her care, and the sacrifices that she made to take him in when she was still so young herself. 

Although she tried her best to raise him regardless of his scars, Baekhyun was quick to leave her home upon turning eighteen. After four years of working various part-time jobs, Baekhyun's fund from his father was finally unlocked. Taking this money plus what he had bestowed away from his work, he turned his head to the right direction: college. After witnessing how both his parents suffered under the hands of the healthcare system, Baekhyun vowed to dedicate his life to becoming a doctor and saving others. He had always been a precocious child, but upon this realization of his destiny, Baekhyun studied endlessly and was ultimately granted a spot at one of the top universities in the country. Currently, Baekhyun is twenty-six years old and is studying in medical school to pursue his career of becoming a surgeon with a focus in neurosurgery.

Aside from his educational prowess, Baekhyun has also cultivated a vast set of hobbies himself: Baekhyun has always enjoyed reading, and also took up writing. Throughout his entire life, it was his only way of escaping the demons that plagued him: his broken family, the death of his parents, the stresses of university. Additionally, Baekhyun enjoys being active and often relieves his stresses by working out, whether it be through busting out a night session at the gym, investing into his lifeguarding job, or hiking on a rare free weekend.

Although Baekhyun was always known throughout his school life as the studious and serious student, he likes to appear to others as though he is carefree and aloof. He genuinely dislikes sharing his worries with others; part of this is due to the fact that he does not want others to feel burdened by the weight of his problems. The other half is caused by what his therapist calls emotional isolationism. Since he was young, Baekhyun was taught to pretend: his parents despite their relationship being clouded with scandal and adultery, utilized a facade to convince their son that his family was normal. When his father died, he was forced to shrivel under his step-family's hateful eyes. When his mother was on her deathbed, Baekhyun suffocated himself within his studies, refusing to see her. Baekhyun has not spoken to his half-sisters in years. Through numerous traumatizing events in his life, Baekhyun has only learned that when you expose your inner demons, only pain comes from this vulnerability. Therefore, despite his charming exterior and easy smiles, Baekhyun has trust issues. He simply refuses to accept that anyone could truly help him. 

It is easy for someone to convince themselves that they know Baekhyun. "Oh, he's such a cool and funny guy!" "Super chill, he's a great tutor." "He seems like a serious guy but once you get to know him, he's super easy-going." All wrong. Since his teenage years, Baekhyun has built this strong wall; many people believe that they have gotten through it, but little do they know that Baekhyun's easy-going facade masks a traumatized child with no true sense of self. 

Although he does try to live his life to the fullest and laugh with people, he has just built that persona of his to cover up the true him. The flirtatious jokester; that was an image he had built. It's easy to think that's all he is. But there's more, that no one knows.

Baekhyun's therapist claims he has issues with sharing his true thoughts and feelings to people. But that's wrong. To him, he doesn't need to share it with other people because he already has a method of venting: writing. Baekhyun writes his poems and short stories to convey the pain he has always felt his entire life. The only thing is, he has never shared these stories with anyone either. Until you. One day, Baekhyun drops his notebook, where he not only writes but also journals his deep thoughts. You stumble upon it, and suddenly, you are a stranger that knows every detail about him.

Admittedly, Baekhyun isn't the most self-aware person. A bad habit of his is leaving his apartment door unlocked— dangerous, he knows. Yet the most dangerous thing that ever snuck into his apartment was you. Late one night, Baekhyun is barely drifting to bed when he hears movement outside. Immediately on high alert, he carefully makes his way outside to the living room, bat in his hand. But all he finds is a person laying down mindlessly on his couch. You had gotten drunk and mistook Baekhyun's door for yours. Chaos insues.

With how emotionally closed-off Baekhyun is, one could assume that he didn't do relationships. But that was wrong; in high school there was one girl that he admired. But alas, it wasn't meant to be, as a bitter breakup that neither of you really wanted tore you apart. Here, five years later, you reunite at Casia. With resentment still remaining, how do you go about seeing each other again? (Note: this likely won't go into romance)

There is nothing Baekhyun enjoys more than a nice drink after a stressful week. This past week has been an absolute nightmare for him; to unwind, he takes a trip alone to the bar. You're there, sitting a few seats down from him and despite feeling miserable yourself, you notice him looking like . You've always been a fairly friendly person, unafraid to talk to strangers. So you introduce yourself, and offer your ear to any of Baek's troubles. In return, the two of you develop a relationship where you can tell each other anything: the majority of your visits include getting buzzed either at the bar or each other's apartments and complaining the out of life.

You're not necessarily a clumsy person. But one morning as you're walking and looking down at your phone simultaneously,  you hit something. Or, more specifically, someone. You look up and, oh , there's your morning coffee spread all over Baekhyun's white shirt. You apologize and apologize, and despite Baekhyun's reassurance that you're fine, you insist that you take him out to breakfast to make up for the loss.

You and Baekhyun have never really gotten along: he's an aloof, teasing character while you're more sensitive and serious.  It wasn't that you hated each other, but your personalities didn't match. He thought you were no fun, and you thought he was rude and insensitive. That all changes when the two of you coincidentally show up to volunteer at the same place and through these few days of volunteering, you realize that maybe Byun Baekhyun, the rude and insensitive jokester, wasn't so bad atfter all.
