Unlike most his kind, Hugh lived in the city among the human before he had to move into Volsung Village - a village where he grew up - when the alpha leader was dying from an old age. He didn't want to be a leader of the pack as he saw himself as unworthy of such responsible. His laid back personality was not expected of a leader. Moreover, the feud that had been going on for generations between the packs was another reason for him not wanting to take the role. When the old man passed away, Hugh looked after him until he could take care of himself and left for the city. Their romance bloomed when Hugh returned to take over the previous deceased leader's position.
