A sigh reverberated around the room for the umpteenth time as the boy stared at the letter in his hands, skimming through the letters and words that make up its content as if he had not already have every single sentence and punctuation engraved into his brain—and his parents for that matter. The acceptance letter of the elite university’s law department had arrived merely a week ago and his parents had already thrown a lavish dinner party inside their house in celebration of his recent high school graduation at the top of his class and admission to the best higher-degree facility in the city, following the career paths of the people who have raised him. Born to a father highly ranked in the administrative government of Seoul and to a mother owning a prestigious law firm, Kim Seungmin had no choice but to be that perfect child to continue the family legacy.

Growing up, Seungmin showed high intelligence in school. Always the top of his class, from being class president in all of his school years to being school president in his final year of high school. As the only child from a wealthy and prominent family, he was given only the best of the best opportunities that pushed him to work harder towards success. And success came in the form of the letter between his fingers and the numerous academic certificates, awards, and medals that decorated his bedroom walls.

However, with success came responsibilities, burden, inner turmoil, expectations and creating and upholding this perfect image his parents wanted for nineteen years and running—a façade, caged away from the real world, filled with lost dreams, identity confusion, and constant desire for change, for freedom, and to finally be who he wanted to be.

Seungmin released the piece of paper before his anxious fingers created creases from gripping it too hard with another sigh, getting up from his desk and throwing his entire body, belly first, on top of his bed in an unrefined manner. Rolling on his back after rubbing his face on his fluffy pillow in attempt to make all of his thoughts disappear, Seungmin reached for his phone from the bedside table. The glass screen illuminated his facial features amidst his dimly lit room, fingers scrolling through his social media filled with more and more congratulatory messages from acquaintances and officials he could care less about. An advertisement of the hot new mobile game caught his attention and his fingers made quick work in downloading it onto his phone.

Seungmin wasn’t a gamer. Games were considered to be a waste of time when he could be using those precious hours burying his nose into novels and textbooks. But there was an attractive pull towards a game that advertised itself to players of a new story, a new tale. For just one hour, Seungmin decided he could give in to one of his deepest desires. What he did not know was that it was going to be a lot more than just one hour.
