everything happened quickly. one day he had been packing up his bags and saying goodbye to his parents, the next he was in a dorm and unpacking everything he had spent the time to neatly arrange. it was surreal for him, all those years ago, and maybe with the knowledge he had now, he never would have went to university.
the beginning was fine. it was when he had chosen his frat that everything went wrong. it was just supposed to be a pledge with a couple of his friends, and it all went sour. he managed to get away at first, the murder that happened right in front of his eyes etched and burned there.
but that's not what would burn him, scar him forever.
he thought it was a freak accident. that the pledging, the branding, wasn't all that abnormal, but what he had seen was just... an accident. perhaps it was naivety, or it was his brain trying to block out whatever he had seen. but when he was dragged out of his bed not too long after the incident, told to keep his mouth shut, and even despite agreeing with urgency, it wasn't finished until he was met with the searing pain on his thigh. the mark was unmistakeable: a pair of lips sewn shut.
ever since that night, he never spoke of what had happened to him, of what had happened the original night he was to be pledged. he always told himself it was an accident, theat they all just wanted to play it safe.
so he went on with his life, despite the nightmares that would plague him. he did all he could, all the years of school, to be a help to those around him. he put on his bright and smiling face, he made sure everyone around him was alright, and he kept his chin up.
