"how do you look in the mirror, facing the reflection knowing that you've turned into exactly what you have always hated? because i'm torn between killing all those bastards that made me like this, and killing myself so i can stop being like this."
growing up in a circus, brenton certainly did not have it easy in his life. he began training when he was barely four years old, a series of hardcore training activities testing physical and mental endurance through his childhood. soon enough once he was old enough, he started to perform with his parents as trapezist performers. as a kid, he didn't get to attend school much and ultimately he was homeschooled. the circus traveled to different countries, some of the trips lasting months or longer in the same country. but no one had enough time to actually teach him anything school stuff related. circus had taken up too much of their time.
but brenton hadn't complained, he enjoyed the freedom that his parents gave him, when they weren't forcing him to practice another routine. plus, it had been fun enough to travel to different countries, spending time with the locals and eventually understanding the cultures and picking up the languages.
it was funny how you begin to see things clearer as you get older, almost as if the world's decided no more rainbow kid-friendly filters and it's time to face the horrible adult world.
he was ten when he realized the circus wasn't all that fun and bright as it seemed from the outside. much more darker things were going on behind curtains, deeply etched frowns instead of friendly smiles. once he realized that the bruises and wounds on his parents' bodies weren't from actual training but from the ringmaster, the shrill yelps from girls his age were out of terror and pain instead of pyhsical pain from training and a whole lot of other twisted sick games that went on behind the scenes; there was no turning back.
apparently his parents had been in debt to the ringmaster, huge amounts of money owed to the man who, in turn was oweing someone else out of their circus clique. brenton had begged the ringmaster for mercy on his parents, but the man had made him a deal that brenton would soon learn to regret as he grew older.
from that day onwards, his daily routine included training, performing, and sneaking into places to steal valuables after dark. his acrobat skills had granted him easy access sneaking in and out, and take whatever valuables with him that could be traded for money. be it cash, jewelrys, anything that could satisfy the ringmaster so he would go easy on the thwaites fam.
things were looking good at first, brenton was quick and stealthy enough to have never been caught, but the ringmaster had gotten greedy. it wasn't long before he had decided to SEND BRENTON VENTURING INTO THE DEEPER, DARKER SIDE OF THE CRIMINAL UNDERWORLD, FORCING THE BOY TO BE ON THE WRONG SIDES OF LAW. BRENTON COULDN’T SAY NO, DESPITE KNOWING BETTER, NOT WHEN HE WAS BEING THREATENED WITH HIS PARENTS’ LIVES. THE RINGMASTER HAD SIGNED BRENTON UP FOR HEISTS WITH OTHER CRIMINALS, THE SCALE OF THE USUAL PETTY CRIME OF STEALING FROM RICH PEOPLE GOT MUCH BIGGER AND DANGEROUS. BRENTON WASN’T TOO KEEN ABOUT THE IDEA, BUT HE DIDN’T HAVE A CHOICE. IT WAS EITHER WORK FOR THE RINGMASTER, OR TO LET HIS FAMILY SUFFER BY HIS HANDS AGAIN.
BRENTON SOON BECAME A VALUABLE ASSET TO THE TEAM, HE WAS YOUNG, FAST AND DEFINITELY POSSESED ENOUGH SKILLS FOR THE HEISTS TO RUN SMOOTHLY. THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE TEAM BEGAN TREATING HIM LIKE ONE OF THEIR OWN, TEACHING HIM SELF-DEFENSE FIGHTING SKILLS, VARIOUS TECHNIQUES THAT THEY WERE MORE THAN WILLING TO SHARE, SAYING THAT HE HAD POTENTIAL TO GROW. DESPITE THEIR FRIENDLINESS TOWARDS HIM, HE WAS STILL FEELING DISGUSTED AND UNCOMFORTABLE HAVING TO WORKED WITH WANTED CRIMINALS. THOUGH HE HAD PLAYED ALONG, DEEP DOWN KNOWING THAT THESE PEOPLE WERE HIS ONLY HOPE IN ENSURING HIS PARENTS’ DEBT COULD BE PAID OFF.
SO HE DID EVERYTHING THEY ASKED. STEALING VALUABLE AND INFORMATION, GOING TO EXTRA LENGTHS EVEN IF IT MEANT WOUNDING AND INJURING OTHER PEOPLE JUST TO GET WHAT HE WANTED- THEY WANTED, PROVING HIMSELF TO THEM. SPENDING THAT MUCH TIME IN THE CRIMINAL UNDERWORLD HAD BOTH ITS PROS AND CONS. HE WAS ABLE TO DEVELOP HIS CRIMINAL SKILLS AND EARN MONEY FOR THE RINGMASTER, OF COURSE, BUT DEEP DOWN HIS HATRED FOR CRIMINALS not unlike the ringmaster ONLY GREW, VIOLENCE AND RAGE FILLED HIS HEART IN HAVING TO WITNESS ALL SORTS OF DIRTY AND VIOLENT DEALS THAT WENT DOWN. guilt arose within him, knowing that families could be ruined because of his actions.
HE HAD HOPED THAT MAYBE ONE DAY, HE COULD PAY OFF HIS PARENTS’ DEBT AND EVERYTHING WOULD BE NORMAL. BUT NORMAL WAS ALREADY OUT OF THE OPTIONS SINCE LONG AGO.
IT WAS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER NIGHT, AND BRENTON HAD JUST FINISHED OFF ANOTHER MAJOR HIEST WHEN HE GOT BACK TO THE CIRCUS, ONLY TO FIND THE ENTIRE PLACE ON FLAMES. SCREAMS OF HELPLESSNESS AND DESPAIR FILLED HIS EARS, ACCOMPANIED BY SMELL OF BURNING FLAMES. HE WASN’T ABLE TO DO ANYTHING, COULD ONLY WATCH AS THE CIRCUS WENT UP IN FLAMES, TAKING EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE WITH IT.
HIS PARENTS’ BODIES WERE NEVER FOUND, BUT IT WAS BELIEVED THAT THEY WERE DEAD. AFTER THEIR DEATH, IT WAS AS IF HE LOST ALL PURPOSE OF HIS LIFE; HE WASN’T SURE WHAT TO DO, THERE WAS NO REASON FOR HIM TO CONTINUE HIS CRIMINAL LIFESTYLE, AND SCHOOL SEEMED TO BE THE ONLY OPTION LEFT. HE WENT BACK TO SCHOOL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS, SLOWLY CATCHING UP IN HIS STUDIES AND EVENTUALLY WORKING HARD ENOUGH TO EXCELL. HE WAS IN THE SYSTEM FOR A LONG TIME, BEFORE HE WAS TAKEN IN BY A POLICE DETECTIVE, WHO HAD RECENTLY JUST LOST HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN TO A HOUSE ROBBERY TURNED MURDER NOT LONG AGO.
LIVING WITH A DETECTIVE HAD STRESSED BRENTON OUT, AS HE WAS CONSTANTLY REMINDED OF HIS CRIMINAL LIFESTYLE BACK THEN. the detective's keen preception had soon let him realize brenton's loathe for criminals, and injustice. so he started to tell stories to brenton, stories of criminals who got away and families who suffered, stories of injustice that only serve to make brenton the more determined to forget his criminal past. it wasn't long before a new set of training began for the ex-circus slash young criminal boy, grooming him into utilizing his skills for crime fighting instead.
soon enough when he reached 18, the first thing he did was to join the police academy, and graduated as top of his class in no time. he joined the force soon after, eventually becoming one of the assets of the team. his crime solve rate was high, mostly due to his ability to think like a criminal, and his skills in tracking them down due to years of being on the wrong sides of law plus the constant training from his foster father.
if he thought crime fighting would make the guilt he still felt in his heart ease away, that wasn't the case at all. being in this line of work, you start to see the world differently, the ugly cruel sides of the world, whether you like it or not. he got a first row seat in witnessing some of the most disturbing cases that went cold, criminals escaping verdict due to lack of evidences, families being destroyed and devastated over the lack of justice. and those things had only fed the rage in him.
so he began to take things into his own hands. he started to track down criminals who got off easy or were never caught at all, and he had his own ways of punishing them in ways that he thought the system could never. wounding, torturing or even taking their lives. all in the name of justice, that was how he reasons with himself whenever the guilt got the best of him. his adoptive father, the detective was the only who knew of his vigilante acts, and instead of stopping brenton from risking everything, he encouraged and helped him. if anything, he had been proud that brenton was taking matter ito his own hands, saying that the young vigilante detective was only doing what he could never.
he had only been in the force for a few years when interpol recruited him to be one of their agents. he had proven to be exactly what they needed, expert detective skills, multilingual, young, master combatant. he began to travel to different countries, solving crimes and all the while continuing his vigilante acts discreetly.
brenton had honestly thought this would be what he would be doing for the rest of his crime fighting career, but never did he once expect that he would end up seeing his adoptive father and a bunch of other corrupted cops mingling around with an infamous international gang known for trafficking and smuggling activities.
the next thing he knew, his own adoptive father got murdered, as a warning to the police to back off. brenton had been the reason behind, he hadn't hesitated when he took down the gang single-handedly, arresting some of the gang members who wasn't quick enough to escape. and the remaining members had thought the cops that were on their side had sold them out whcih resulted in brenton's adoptive father's death.
his death had been hard for brenton once again, for all these time he had thought he was doing the right thing by defending justice in his own discreet way, even if it meant resulting in blood and long since forgotten conscience. it made him realize how far off he had gone, how ironically was it that he was using the wrong methods to do the right thing, how he hurt people just to punish them and make them stop hurting other people.
and he stopped.
he left the force soon after, quit his job as an interpol agent; people were starting to get suspicious of his activities especially since deaths happened whenever he went, and he wasn't sure anymore if it was the only thing he wanted to do for th rest of his life.
officially out of the business of defending justice and helping people, he soon found himself wandering between cities and towns, never fitting anywhere and staying for long, until he eventually wound up at grayhaven. yet it wasn't the best choice, seeing as how he eventually ended up wandering into the scenes of crime fighting again. the corrupted system and fearless criminals of this city had awakened the bloodlust of justice in him again. and soon he would find himself giving in to the bloodlust, falling back into old routines, taking up the alias 'stranger' for his occasionaly bounty hunting gigs.
he would be lying if he said he didn't want to be back in the scene, but at the same time he was scared that he was slowly losing more control over himself. the guilt that was wearing him down for projecting his rage into punishing criminals in his sadistic ways, the adrenaline rush and satisfaction that resulted from it were slowly driving him into wanting more, and it would be a long time before he could slowly let go of all these pent up negative emotions.
but for now, justice has to be served and he would be damned if he wasn't there for it.

personality junk
as a result of witnessing his family's death and his upbringing by fellow criminals and his equally, if not more violent life of crime-fighting, he has nothing but a lot of pent-up negative emotions within him. to others, brenton might seem stoic, emotionless, quiet, cold, humorless and deadpan, as he tends to keep to himself. he does not get along with most people, resulting in many perceiving him as someone who's rude, stubborn, or even anti-social.
despite his front as a stoic and professional cop, his inner self is much darker than that. all these years of crime-fighting have hardened his heart and feelings. he wants nothing more than to giving in to his bloodlust, hunting those criminals down and punishing them in ways that the system could never.
though he does have his occasional soft sides that come out every now and then, especially when he's a trusted few that he dares to call friends. he has a thing for strays, never looking away from a bird with a broken wing, and he likes it when he gets to help people, which is why this whole vigilante cop thing of his even started at the very first.
he's broken, messed up and certainly has tons of issues that he couldn't even know where to begin with, but for all he knows, it would be a long time before he even sets foot on the path to self-redemption, not without any blood and tears, and certainly not on his lonesome.
