i
soyoon was the only child of a happy, loving family before the virus hit. SHE HAD BEEN RAISED TO BE A BRIGHT, OUTGoing child; perhaps a little too rambunctious for her parents' liking. still, they loved her and treasured her with all her heart. she may have only been twelve when the initial outbreak began, but she wasn't stupid. she knew she had to do whatever it took to keep her and her parents alive.
and so, she learned. she'd always been the active sort of child, which helped immensely whenever she had to fight off the infected to protect her parents. her father was mentally ill, and her mother was weak, so it was up to her. eventually, she led them to an abandoned mall where they took shelter.
eventually, strangers came by in an attempt to search for shelter, and although her father was against it, she welcomed them with open arms. they were all just trying to survive, after all. but before she knew it, the survivors in their little shelter within the mall grew in number, and soyoon found herself going on raids to retrieve nearby buildings for more shelter. eventually, their little shelter became a city, and her parents, considered as founders, became part of the government of ansikjeo.
soyoon wasn't cut out for politics. she was more of the type to keep everyone safe, which is why she was immediately made an officer of the military. she had to go through training, but soyoon was a natural. she easily became major general of the army, making sure the city of ansikjeo had enough food and supplies to keep surviving.
but things changed. eventually, she stopped feeling like she was protecting people, and started feeling as if she was hurting them. executions, punishments, and curfews — honestly, she didn't blame the rebels for fighting the way they did.
it was then that she met her. sooyoung was a rebel who changed soyoon's way of thinking. she began to supply the rebels with food, weapons, anything they might need. eventually, she was caught. she should have been executed, but at her mother's tearful pleas, soyoon was instead arrested.
she had been in prison for two years when the second outbreak hit. it was her mother that freed her, and in that tearful reunion she'd learned that her father had been infected all these years. those years she'd spent caring for him and holding him down during his outbursts, and those years she'd spent guiding him once he turned blind — those were all symptoms of the virus.
she tried to escape with her mother, carrying her on her shoulders as she crossed the borders of ansikjeo. but to her despair, her mother was shot in the ruckus. soyoon held her mother's hand as she died, fighting back tears as her mother apologized for the way things had turned out.
and so, soyoon travels alone. in fear of oppressive discipline ruling over a large group of people once more, she stays quiet in groups of survivors, always ready to leave at the first sign of trouble. aloof, detached, and definitely intimidating — soyoon is definitely not the type of person you'd wanna mess with.
