they say that some people are born into luck. that everything in their life will go right, no matter the circumstance. 

soojin considers herself to be the most unlucky person she knows.

her father passed away shortly after she was born, due to complications with his heart disease.  Likewise, she was born with atrial septal defect, or put more simply, a hole in her heart. mostly unbothersome, the only problems that arose were shortness of breath and an inability to run around as a child.

it wasn't as though she wanted to run around anyways. growing up, she rarely desired to play and much rather preferred indoor activities: reading, writing, and the  like. as her friends often told her, it was like the hole in her heart was literal. 

she had always been a quiet girl, with a venomous tongue. growing up in the darkened shadow of her older brother, she had learned to rarely speak out, save for when it mattered most. 

her mother had always favored her brother. it was pure fact; he was smarter, more athletic. even more, he was her first. It was not immensely noticeable at first: her brother got greater birthday gifts, mom would always pile his dinner plate after plate and never her's, he was cut more slack than she was ever allowed. soojin used to envy her brother, for he had their mother's love. she fought for her attention, doing well in school, trying to outdo whatever her brother did.  however as she grew, she came to learn that it was because of something she could not control: her brother reminded their mother of their father. that was something that neither of them spoke aloud, but came to understand. 

the loss of their father was felt greatly. their mother was only an elementary school teacher. the kids had learned to pick up small miniscule jobs since their young days.
