big steps, nowhere to go.

a mid-april crossbreeze bodes well for the fauna outside of the baekje residence. hongseok's birth occupied the 17th in 1994, a notable uproar of house members gathering in numbers to attend to the newborn. his upbringing proceeded with the intention of creating the jack of all trades with a scholarly finish. while renowned and  greatly refined, baekje's educational resources had pressured hongseok to communicate his emotions upon empty actions, none of which helped him cope with the high standards that sullied his subconscious. his formative years were rife with rebellion and arrogance, traits which are almost latent given how prestigious of an environment he was birthed in. these antics of his were petty but ranged from thievery to physical altercation. whispers of a self-centered, incredibly complacent child were ubiquitous in the house of the black tortoise, and hongseok was nearly a shamed mark on the house for most of his younger life. at the age of 19, he was reluctantly sent away overseas for international studies. this was to not only engage with his intellectual aptitude which remained idle for his childhood, but it also acted as a disciplinary effort mandated by his parents in order to remedy his behavior. after six years, at the age of 25, he had retuned as a changed individual, now wanting to embrace and valorize his royal status once more after experiencing a world beyond his own. now aged 26, a year after his return, he in on an ongoing mission: reconcilliation for those he had wronged in his younger years.

in 2015, 21 year old hongseok and three of his acquaintances ventured to the himalayan mountain range to engage with one of the most esteemed hiking trails, everest being just a glance into the horizon. in one of the initial climbs, the group had split in half to race to the end of the trail - two groups of two. while hongseok had reached the end with his team, two of his acquaintances disappeared from tangible sight, a large callout to their names not enticing them back into view. a rescue team was sent out to locate the missing individuals only to find them both at the bottom of a cliff below a 275 meter drop. their deaths were caused by impact trauma. hongseok was the one that supplied them the gear, the idea of hiking near in the himalayas, and he was the one that flew him out. conversely, hongseok was the one to fly out and personally deliver the news to their families. after their deaths, hongseok made for thailand, where he stayed in the capital metropolitan area to isolate himself. in his mind, if he is to get over his own guilt, his own remorse, then he must drink himself into a stupor.

he then sets out for japan, skips the alcohol consumption for the time being, and occupies his daily life with a homeless individual who had recently just lost his wife and son in the years prior. the man was soft-spoken, yet incredbily charismatic. they always met at the initial corner of the corner which they had first encountered each other. he always addressed hongseok like he were his own kin because, in his words, "there's something incredibly damaging in your gaze, son. i can feel it. and it's not malice as you think, it's sadness and a crumbling of your soul. i can see the color draining from your eyes." hongseok would often buy the man meals that would able to satisfy him, and in return, the man would be hongseok's ears to his woes, his regrets as a deviant child back in homeplace. hongseok had offered the man money to get his life back together, however the man waves his hands, palms dirtied by months spent in his living conditions, "no, no. i am fine. a real person builds themselves back up by using merit, not wealth. wealth is simply the byproduct." the man then grabs his rug, which he had situated his personal belongings atop, and treads away from hongseok. "please, do not follow me. i am off to make amends. i wish you the best, my son." hongseok, while reluctantly, abides by the mans words and lets each syllable carry him for the following years. hongseok still recalls the man - his mannerisms - and the many wrinkles which adhered to his expressions.

hongseok carries on. he takes his newly found mind to the rest of the world, still trying to assimilate a new life into his heart, his soul. he keeps his royal background under wraps,  seeking refuge among likeminded individuals instead of using his status as emotional affirmation. he takes up tutoring, being a professor at universities in north america and asia, he creates a small journal in which he recalls his daily occurences and puts them into the context of the man he had met just years before, linking his quotes to his future self. the name of baekje calls for him to reunite with his mind, his scholarly potential that remained unsullied. hongseok now measured his worth in the lives he's met rather than the money he spent. he makes a decision, he has loose ends still remaining at the very palace in which he grew up. the young prince seeks to righten his wrongs. it is late 2019, and he has now returned, journal in hand. the latest entry reads as a bullet list - steps to returning to royalty. each header is in bold:
