the best way to avoid disappointment is to have no expectations in the first place.

born as a premature baby, from the start, doyeon has been seen as a delicate and weak kid. at a young age, she found that those with more power are in the most danger. not to mention, she found the life as a royal suffocating.

always being watched and having to watch her back at all times, she longed to have the life of the average citizen of aerok.  

in an attempt to try to reduce her reponsibilites as a princess and drive attention away from herself, she decided at seven to take advantage of this preconcieved "weak" persona of hers and portray herself as someone incapable and untalented, even to her own family and not just the public; going as far as to fake failing at every skill and purposely having a lower than stellar performance in her studies, despite having natural talent at archery and being quite intelligent. in fact, she purposely failed at the military academy as soon as she heard her father was thinking of placing her as a lieutenant in the navy.

furthermore, she feigns a slight ignorance with the current politics and hides her passions—only practicing archery alone in the dead of night, sneaking out into the forest to play instruments, and hiding her art underneath subpar imitations of them.

additionally, she often contributes to charities and poor communities. however, she always does it under a fake name or in disguise in fear of drawing any attention to herself.

you could say that the general consensus thinks of doyeon more as a waste of oxygen. but she's okay with that.

although she wishes she could take down her front for everyone to see who she truly is, deep down inside, she has a crippling fear of disappointing those around her. so she continues to act with the mentality that by leaving no possibilty for those to form expectations for her, she will never disappoint or let anyone down. 

•.*★ chapter two。 the trip of a lifetime.

during the summer of 2018, doyeon decided to go on a camping trip up in the mountains by herself. knowing full well that her parents wouldn't allow her if she asked for permission, she sneaks out in the middle of the night  to drive almost an hour and a half to her destination. on the way, she notices a black car driving in the same direction as her, but does not think much of it.

putting her campsite right by a peaceful waterfall, she spends five days enjoying her little trip, joyfully hunting, fishing, picking wildflowers, reading books, playing her guitar, and exploring nature, all without the suffocating atmosphere of the palace.

during the fifth fateful night of her trip, doyeon dedicated her time admiring the starry night sky, picking out her favorite constellations as she sat near her campfire, until the quiet zipping sound of a bullet buzzed past her ear. with a fresh cut on her cheekbone earned by the missed bullet, doyeon acted as quickly as possible, grabbing her bow and shooting in the direction from where the bullet seemed to come from.

squinting her eyes at the darkness, she quickly finds out that miraculously, her arrow knocked a gun, which seems to have a silencer attached to it out of a mysterious figure's hands. with no time to spare, doyeon drops her bow and attempts to subdue the man as she doesn't want to kill him, but to no avail. at gunpoint, the attacker finally is able to get a good view of doyeon's face.

"wait, you're just princess doyeon?" he chuckles. "you're not even worth killing."

this assassin mistakened her to be one of the other goguyeo daughters.

to her surprise, the man takes the gun away from the girl's head, backing away for a few seconds before pointing it at her again.

"but i can't let you run your mouth off."

knowing full well that this assassin will eventually make his way to her sisters, in a bold act, she lunges at the man, trying her best to turn his gun on himself. the two wrestle around with immense struggle until the man accidentally slips and falls onto doyeon's campfire.

with the man letting out a horrid scream, doyeon grabs a pocket knife as he runs around struggling to put himself out. she cautiously watches him, keeping the blade of the knife pointed in his direction.

the assassin finds himself at the edge of the waterfall nearby, nd decides to take doyeon down with him. as final attempt for blood, he lunges at her, only for doyeon to dodge and slit his throat in defense. in shock, the assassin stares at the girl one last time before letting out his last breath and plunging down into the waters below.

traumatized by the experience, doyeon returns back to the palace where she finds out that her parents did not even notice her absence. she makes an attempt to tell them what had happened, but they thoughtlessly shoo her away as to them, anything she says must be either worthless or a joke.

to this day, she is unable to tell others about her experience and still has nightmares about the night, often waking herself up by her own screams and seeing the man's blood still on her hands, unable to wash it off.

•.*★ plotting style。 i like plotting beforehand just so i can get the gist of the plot and to avoid having writers block. i can wing to an extent, but plotting is greatly beneficial to the quality of my replies.
