Yoongi remembered the first time he realized he was different, when he was 4 and he had been climbing a tree with his younger brother even though they had been warned not to by their mother. He slipped and fell, tumbling down and fracturing his wrist with a sickening crack. His brother, only 2, freaked out and ran screaming to get their mother. During the entire process, Yoongi was very quiet. Why? Because he hadn't even felt the break. The doctors told his parents that he was in shock, and that was blocking most of the pain. Combined with the heavy pain meds they tried to use on him, no one ever knew that the small boy had never felt the pain at all. But Yoongi knew. And as he got older, it only became more apparent that he was different. When he would get in trouble with teachers and parents for hurting the other children, he was confused. How did he hurt them? And more importantly, what was being hurt? He was always confused when the other children would scream and cry after scraping their knee, spraining their ankle, and so on. He never noticed his own injuries he had gotten from playing too rough until they were pointed out, the boy shrugging in indifference. He couldn't feel it, so why was it a problem? Soon his parents got wind of this. Their oldest child was a freak, something to be feared. They locked him in a room, and the boy never saw sunlight not from a small window for 10 years. He was taken care of at least, given food and water at regular intervals, had a bathroom en suite, books. But he was so, so lonely.No one ever came to check up on him personally, no one comforted him when he had nightmares that grew worse, or held him as he cried. Because...he wasn't like others. He wasn't human. He couldn't be. So then, what did it matter if he hurt himself? What did it matter if he died? By the time he left the house at 17, escaping and running away into a new life, he had scars and burns, new and old, layered over pale skin, and so many scars over his heart that it was easier to pretend it didn't exist. And before long, it became true.
