Once upon a time, there was a small, unknown orphanage in the outskirts of Aerok. Many children aging between 2 months old to 12 live in this rundown place, together being looked after by a few nuns who were like angels sent from the heavens. One of the children, was Choi Seungcheol. Ever since he could start remembering things, he was already in this orphanage. He was one of the sandwich kids, with a few older than him and a lot more younger than him. Being taught by the nuns, he grew up taking care of the younger kids by working in the kitchen, cooking three meals a day for them. At the age of seven, he stood on his little bench and beared the heat coming from the stove, ignoring all the sweat running down his forehead. By the age of sixteen, he was already a chef with reputation among the kids and nuns. He loved cooking, and with the encouragement from the nuns, he planned to seek a job in the town as a chef. Even though he was never being adopted by any families, he was never jealous about it despite watching his playmates left one by one. New kids constantly came into the orphanage with different reasons, and as one of the older kids he felt the responsibility to help out the nuns who were getting old. However, his job seeking in the town was not successful. And this time, he could not put himself to smile as it hurt his self-esteem. He could not rely on the nuns anymore, it was already hard for them to raise the kids in the orphanage, so one night after the thoughts had flushed across his last borderline, he ran away.
He started to live on the streets in town, seeking ways to survive. While he tried to look for a job, it was harder than he thought when people looked down on his background. He had to eat, so he would steal a few apples, sometimes the vegetables, finishing them in the alley and walked out like nothing had happened.
Did he hate this kind of life? Yes. Did he have a choice? No.
Finally, a restaurant owner decided to hire him when the last chef left them without notice. Seungcheol was on cloud nine and he worked hard, thinking of giving some of his pay to the nuns to relieve their pressure. But when he got his first month pay and returned to the same place, the orphanage had been burnt down into ashes because the debt they had accumulated was far more than expected. His heart ached as he blamed himself for not being able to help them sooner, but now he had to help the other kids. He could never abandon them. It was also when he reunioned with his old friend, who was adopted by his foster parents when he was younger. The two gained a mutual goal into helping the kids: one was trained well and used his skills for stealing, while he continued working and helped him to cover his tracks. But one day after a couple of years, he disappeared. No one knew where he went, and the kids needed to be fed. Seungcheol happened to know he was going to steal something in the Gaya palace, and that could be where he was. So in order to find him, Seungcheol quitted his job and entered the palace. What he didn't expect was, he became a royal guard when he was applying to be a royal chef.
It didn't matter though, as long as he entered the palace, there was always a chance to find out what happened to his best friend. And he could still get paid, much higher than a cook in town.
And so, his story started...
