nce upon a time, when spiritual beliefs are still prominent in the land of Aerok — when technology and science have yet to make their advancement, the Choi family climbed their way up the social ladder by dabbling in the occult and opening a fortune telling business. They soon gained popularity within the house of Goguryeo, and eventually, the whole country.

The government conferred the family dukedom due to their influence, which caused their greed and obsession to grow. They knew that the spiritual realm was beyond reach, but the people of Aerok fortunately hadn't caught up yet. Both royals and civilians would often come to them for advice about almost anything, and Choi's Fortune Telling Services — a name the family was collectively known as — would use cards, the stars — anything to justify their bull. And people believed them. Humans are gullible creatures, after all.

Perhaps they spoke too soon, because the next thing they knew, their clients, even their most loyal ones, had stopped asking them for help. In fact, they turned their backs against the family when scientific evidence conquered blind trust in the supernatural, and the Choi family went from being one of the nation's most respected family below the royals to a bunch of frauds. The business starts making its way to bankruptcy, causing them to resort to amusement park fortune telling, as people start treating them as a joke. Even the government had threatened to denounce them as aristocrats.

This was where little Choi Yena stepped in — a grave mistake which cost her her own freedom.

It was merely because adults have a tendency to underestimate kids. Yena overheard her parents talking about money, bankruptcy, not being able to stay the way they are — so in a desperate attempt to help her family, she told them that she had been hearing their ancestors' voice telling her that she was the only one who could save the family. Sometimes she would act possessed, as if the spirit of the late Chois had taken over her, prompting her parents to believe that she was genuinely gifted with supernatural abilities. And her intuition — her damn intuition — was much better than what the family has ever seen.

The Choi family might have been frauds, but Yena was the real deal.

So they pulled her out of school early and hired private tutors instead, teaching her the dos and don't's of running (inheriting) a business, various fortune telling methods, and so on. She didn't hate it at first — learning how to read tarot cards was especially interesting, and she knew she was doing her family a huge favor. 

Eventually she realized that she was sacrificing her life for it. She had little to no control over her life, and god forbid that she develop an interest for anything outside the supernatural realm. So she started to resent it. Heck, she wasn't even a psychic or anything her family claimed her to be — or what she pretended to be. If the Choi family had anything running in their blood, it would be the art of deception. And Yena isn't immune to it.

She knew that she should have developed some sort of hatred for her parents for stealing her life away from her just to maintain their status. She knew that she could've just walked away from this life whenever she wanted, and that she would not suffer the consequences from it. She did not care about dukedom or whatever it is that blinded her family with greed. So why did she choose to stay?

Yena would blame it on her lack of education for anything else, but really, she just cared too deeply for her parents despite everything. A part of her wished that they would be proud of her even on their deathbed, so she decided to carry the heavy burden of living as a fraud on her back, just to hear the four words no one has ever told her before: "I'm proud of you."

Thus, she had no other choice but to continue living a lie, resorting to unhealthy methods to keep her sane, but nothing lasts forever. In a country where one is bound to get themselves entangled in its politics one way or another, it was only a matter of time before her mask crumbles along with the same government she lives to impress.

yena has two personalities for work and outside work. if you happen to meet her for a session, she tends to display a cold and stoic demeanor, and would rarely (if ever) attach herself to her clients, believing that it is important to keep her work and personal life separate. outside her fortune telling sessions, however, she is significantly more bubbly and approachable. she tries to maintain a traditionally feminine attitude due to her upbringing, but she will let herself loose once she's comfortable, occasionally slipping in a few swear words here and there in her speech。

Activity & Reply Speed

•.*★ important。 I will never poke you. Never poke me or I will ragequit/ignore you. You also don't need to remind me about me owing you a reply. I usually remember who I'm roleplaying with. Also refrain from using my activity or lack of it as an excuse to pester me about a reply. Doing like that will just annoy me and make me prolong sending something if I send something at all.

My replying speed varies depending on my muse/ooc schedule. I try to reply in order, but exceptions can always be made for threads I have more muse with and/or shorter ones. Please inform me if you'd like to drop our thread!
