six years after the battle of hogwarts, a couple answered a knock on their door while their daughter, asleep in her bed, dreams of fairytales and remained oblivious to the horror of what's to come next. it was none other than her uncle, theodore nott, introducing himself and bearing them the news that changed their lives forever.

MONTHS AFTER THAT, THE YOUNG COUPLE WAS FOUND TRAVELLING TO SCOTLAND WITH THEIR LITTLE GIRL, PROVIDED WITH AN ESTATE, MILLIONS OF GALLEONS ON THEIR VAULT AND A PRIVILEDGED LUXURY THAT THE LITTLE GIRL, VERONICA ARTEMIS NOTT, WOULD SOON GROW ACCUSTOMED OF. BUT IT'S ONLY AROUND THE TENDER AGE OF TEN, WHEN HER FATHER SAT HER DOWN IN HIS STUDY, DID SHE UNDERSTAND IT ALL.

HE TOLD HER THE STORY OF A YOUNG WOMAN FROM A QUIET, PUREBLOOD FAMILY WHO JUST GRADUATED FROM HOGWARTS AND WAS OFFERED A JOB IN THE MINISTRY, FALLING IN LOVE WITH A MAN WHO WAS KNOWN TO BE DORIAN NOTT. ENAMOURED BY THE ATTENTION OF ONE OF THE MOST ANCIENT AND NOBLE HOUSE FROM THE SACRED TWENTY-EIGHT, THE YOUNG WOMAN WAS WEAK ENOUGH TO BE SWOONED BY HIM— THIS RESULTING TO AN AFFAIR THAT SHE REGRETTED SOON AFTER. IT TURNED OUT THAT HE WAS ENGAGED TO A WOMAN NAMED CORNELIA ROSIER AND, HEART BROKEN, SHE DECIDED TO BREAK TIES WITH THE MAN. YET, IT WAS TOO LATE, THE WRONGDOINGS AND BAD CHOICES PILING UP THAT SHE FOUND HER LIFE SPIRALING DOWN FROM THERE...

IT WAS A SUNNY MORNING THAT DAY ON NOVEMBER '77 WHEN SHE LEARNED THAT SHE WAS CARRYING DORIAN NOTT'S CHILD, TWO MONTHS AFTER THE NEWS OF HIS WEDDING WAS POSTED IN THE PROPHET. HORRIFIED, SINCE SHE HAD BEEN HOPEFUL THAT THE CONTRACEPTIVE CHARM WOULD KEEP HER SAFE FROM PREGNANCY, THE YOUNG WOMAN BROKE DOWN IN TEARS, UNSURE HOW SHE WOULD RAISE A CHILD BY HERSELF— CONCEIVED FROM AN ILLICIT AFFAIR. BUT THAT WAS NOT THE WORST OF ALL, IT WOULD SEEM, BECAUSE THE MAN THAT SHE LOVED, DORIAN NOTT, HAPPENED TO BE A DEATH EATER, SET ON RIDDING THE WORLD OF MUGGLES AND MUGGLEBORNS, CAMPAIGNING FOR BLOOD PURITY.

THAT HAD SET THE WOMAN OFF IN HYSTERICS, VERONICA'S FATHER ADDED. AFRAID FOR HER FAMILY'S SAFETY SINCE THEY HAD BEEN CONSIDERATE WITH MUGGLES, SHE TOLD THEM THE TRUTH AND WAS ADVICED TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY, THOUSANDS OF GALLEONS IN HER POCKET AND NOT KNOWING THAT IT WOULD BE THE LAST TIME SHE'D SEE THEM AGAIN. VERONICA'S FATHER WAS FOUR WHEN HE SAW HIS MOTHER MOURN, GRANDPARENTS AND THE UNCLES HE NEVER KNEW OF AMBUSHED in their home BY DEATH EATERS FOUR MONTHS BEFORE THE END OF THE FIRST WIZARDING WAR. AND WHAT WAS WORSE? HIS BIRTH FATHER PLEADED INNOCENT FOR HIS CRIMES, CLAIMING IMPERIOUS AND NOT SERVING TIME IN AZKABAN WITH THOSE FROM voldemort's 'INNER CIRCLE'. HE REMEMBERED HIS MOTHER LOOKING AT A PICTURE OF LADY NOTT, TOO, HOLDING A NEWBORN CHILD; DARK HAIR, SOFT CHEEKS, AND OBSIDIAN EYES— HIS HALF BROTHER, THEODORE NOTT.

TERRIFIED AND OVERCAME WITH GRIEF, ALWAYS LOOKING OVER HER SHOULDER TO MAKE SURE THAT DORIAN NOTT WAS NOT HIDING IN THE SHADOWS TO TAKE HER CHILD AWAY, THEY LIVED QUIETLY WITH MUGGLES IN SOUTH KOREA. JUNGHWAN LEE REMAINED AWARE OF WHAT HE IS, HOWEVER, HOME SCHOOLED BY HIS MOTHER, YET STILL TARGETTED BY MUGGLE KIDS FOR BEING DIFFERENT. THAT WAS NOT A PROBLEM TO HIM— AND IT CONTINUED NOT TO BE JUST AS WHEN THE SECOND WIZARDING WAR CAME AND LEFT.

HIS MOTHER, FRAIL FROM THE PAINS OF THE PAST, ONLY HEAVED A SIGH OF RELIEF AND SMILED WHEN SHE HEARD THE NEWS OF VOLDEMORT'S DEFEAT AND THE IMPRISONMENT OF DORIAN NOTT. SHE PASSED THREE NIGHTs AFTER, JUNGHWAN AND HIS NEW WIFE, JOOHYUN SHIN, BURYING HER REMAINS NEXT TO HIS MATERNAL FAMILY'S GRAVES. STILL UNSURE OF RETURNING BACK TO THEIR FAMILY HOME IN BRITAIN, JUNGHWAN DECIDED TO STAY LONGER IN daegu, LEADING A QUIET LIFE WITH THE PUREBLOOD WITCH HE MET IN A MUGGLE RESTAURANT AND SOON GETTING THE GOOD NEWS THAT SHE WAS CARRYING HIS CHILD, LITTLE VERONICA.

MEANWHILE, IN THE NOTT MANOR, QUICKLY INHERITING THE FAMILY'S FORTUNE AND BECOMING THE NEW HEAD OF HOUSE, THEODORE NOTT STUMBLED UPON THE FRAYING EDGES OF THE FAMILY TAPESTRY, SEEING, FOR THE FIRST TIME, AN EXTENSION NEXT TO HIS FATHER'S NAME: A WOMAN AND A YOUNG MAN. THAT DAY, HE LEARNED THAT HE WAS NOT AN ONLY CHILD.

AND THAT WAS HOW HER UNCLE FOUND THEM, JUNGHWAN UNSURE OF LETTING HIM IN SINCE HE WAS THE SON OF A DEATH EATER who ruined his mother's life; SLYTHERIN AND PUT ON TRIAL BY COOPERATING WITH THE DARK LORD. BUT HE HAD BEEN QUICK TO REFUSE SUCH ACCUSATION, BARING HIS ARM FOR THE YOUNG COUPLE TO SEE, NO DARK MARK FOUND BLEEDING ON PALE SKIN. HE HAD WANTED FAMILY, HE SAID, TOO AFRAID TO LIVE WITHIN THE HAUNTED WALLS OF THE MANOR, WHERE HE SAW HIS MOTHER DIE, COLD IN BED. HE SHARED HIS PLANS OF REBUILDING THE ANCIENT AND NOBLE HOUSE OF NOTT BACK TO ITS FORMER GLORY, AS WELL, WAY BEFORE DORIAN NOTT FOUND IT FIT TO SERVE THE sociopathic BOOGEYMAN. IT WAS NOT AN EASY THING TO ACCEPT, VERONICA'S FATHER LATER ADMITTED, THE TWO BROTHERS GOING BACK AND FORTH UNTIL JOOHYUN POINTED OUT THAT HIS OWN CHILDHOOD HAD BEEN AS BAD AS THEODORE'S. "VERONICA DOES NOT DESERVE THAT," SHE WHISPERED, BROWN EYES FILLED WITH SADNESS AND WARMTH.

SO, THEY MOVED. AND QUICKLY, YOUNG VERONICA HAD GROWN FOND OF HER UNCLE, ALWAYS EXCITED TO SEE HIM UNTIL THE RED THAT WAS SPILLED ON THE WALLS OF THE NOTT MANOR WAS REPLACED WITH HER CHILDLIKE LAUGHTER. AS PATER FAMILIAS, SINCE JUNGHWAN REFUSED TO REPLACE THEODORE ON HIS POSITION AS HEAD— FINDING IT DISRESPECTFUL TO CORNELIA ROSIER'S NAME SINCE HE WAS BORN FROM AN AFFAIR she had not been privy of— THEODORE STILL FOUND IT FIT THAT JUNGHWAN WAS LEGITIMIZED AS A NOTT. HE TOLD THEM THAT HE HAD NO PLANS OF GETTING MARRIED AND MAKING HIS OWN FAMILY; AND THAT IT WOULD BE BEST THAT VERONICA BECAME THE HEIRESS OF THE HOUSE, TO CARRY ON THEIR LEGACY.

ON MAY '06, THE NEW ADDITIONS TO THE ANCIENT AND NOBLE HOUSE OF NOTT WAS LEGITIMIZED— VERONICA ARTEMIS NOTT, INCLUDED.

when the ten year old heiress exited her father's study that day, she looked at all the portraits that hung on the walls of the nott manor. they were covered by curtains, probably never seeing the light of the day ever again. she also recalled every bit and piece of the story— remember that she's to carry their legacy now and promise herself that no matter what happens— starting on that day, she would continue to get rid of the darkness that ruined the ancient and noble house of nott.

[ — ★ Nott is a surname of a pure-blood wizarding family, one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. The family is old, and seemed to be of a similar status as the Malfoys, with whom they were acquainted.

The Notts generally seemed to be sorted into Slytherin house upon attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During the First and Second Wizarding Wars, they were allied with Lord Voldemort.

if she were to be honest, veronica is proud to be compared to theodore nott.  she'd heard of stories about his academic excellence, one of the twelve students to get n.e.w.t.s. for slughorn's class, graduating with 8 o's, great with dueling and arithmancy. in fact, he'd COMmented that she aces at being a nott without even trying— as if she grew up in nott manor and under the watchful eyes of his late mother. "she'd make a fine lady," he once said to his older brother. she perfected the brooding loner to a t, quiet disposition and a great observer to her surroundings. dark hair, imposing and the perfect ally you could count on.

it isn't the best thing, however.  apparently, being born from a long line of pureblood supremacists and death eaters could attract unwanted attention and bad publicity. and while she had been told of this at the age of 8, it does not stop the DISComfort and shame that claws at the back of her head the moment someone recognizes who she is. often times, when she can help it, she would disappear into a corner to avoid people or refuse to let a stranger know who she is.

it wasn't as bad like it used to, though, once she Started attending hogwarts, finding friends who almost share the same background and experiences of being affiliated with a dark lord. by her ambition for perfection— a feat that makes an exceptional slytherin— veronica was able to at least avoid prying eyes from judging her every move, trying to find a misstep— a loophole to drag the family back into the dirt.

(of course, that Doesn't stop her from sneering at certain people.)

her father shared that her first name, veronica, meant 'she who brings victory' from the latin transliteration of the greek name 'berenice'; while artemis, who is known to be the greek goddess of hunting, chastity and the moon, was given as a nod to her grandfather's surname, Nott, which, in norse MYThology, translates to 'night'.

always preferring to be by herself mostly SINCE IT KEEPS HER FOCUSED, one could easily find veronica by her usual spot at the library or reading a book by the lake. veronica also values her time so she likes to get a pass on attending quidditch games, finding it tedious to sit for hours outside when its cold and wet.

as for her opinions with blood purity, she is willing to admit that she still detests muggles the way she despises gryffindors. However, one can catch her interacting with a muggleborn when in a group of academic students.

it is also no secret that she has a FASCInation with the dark arts (given her family name and her hogwarts house), the nott library providing her quite a few nasty tricks up in her sleeves that she'd practice on during summer. still, she would do little to none in conjuring them outright in public, aware that one slip might get her expelled and sent to azkaban.
