(26 years ago) Autumn, Anhak Palace, Guri –– The evening that was once bathed in moonlight was shrouded by clouds.   rain and thunder started the orchestra of cacophony.  The queen's palace was particularly loud.  Accompanied by the shouts of the palace workers as they aided the Queen in labour, the thunder grew stronger until a shrill cry of a newborn drowned it all out.  The queen had bore a prince.  A prince of guri meant that he could be promised a world beyond it's borders, the promise of conquest as he leads multiple armies.  Glory was absolute for the prince.  

But the prince opened his eyes and everything that was promised, vanished.  

Why?  He  bore an eye color which neither resembled the king nor the queens.  A brilliant golden hue which folklore associated demons with.  

No one would dare whisper suspicions of infidelity with the queen right there, but just from the gazes of the palace maids, she knew.  The young prince was indeed the King's biological son, but the queen had no way of proving it.  With a grip on the dagger by her bedside, she thought it would be best to kill him before the king arrived.

King daeseok stormed in at that moment, eyeing both his wife and child with suspicion.  He too, wanted to end the life of that wretched prince.  But he is merciful and wicked so he lets him live.  For a long time Daeseok's only gift to the prince is a name, Jaeyoon.  If Jaeyoon can survive in Anhak palace, he would become guri's most useful tool.  He would become the King's rabid dog.  

(Intermission) The Prince's Youth, Anhak Palace, Guri –– The queen ignored Jaeyoon, she could never love a son who made her the tail end of gossip among the consorts and noble ladies.  The few times Jaeyoon would go to visit his mother, he would always be chided and told to lower his gaze so she didn't have to see his shameful appearance.  Daeseok, on the other hand would ridicule him upfront and make snide remarks about his suspicious origins.  Having never recieved love from his parents meant that many palace servants would ignore Jaeyoon as well.  While he was a legitimate child of the monarchs, he was powerless at best.  Sometimes it felt like people were waiting for his death.  There were only a few people in the palace that seemed to respect the prince.

For that reason, Jaeyoon picked up a sword before he could write.  And when he could read and write He spent most nights rehearsing classical texts.   If no one in the palace would teach him properly, it was upto Jaeyoon himself to polish himself into a man that wouldn't bring guri to shame.  

When word spread throughout the palace and reached the king's ears that Jaeyoon's swordsmanship rivaled the greatest generals of guri and even the king daeseok himself,  Jaeyoon was given a test by the king.  

The test was to join the troops going to the southern borders to quell a rebellion.  If he came back alive, the King would give Jaeyoon his own army to command.  

It was the first time Jaeyoon saw so much bloodshed, and the first time he killed.  Yet the prince didn't feel a thing as he sliced through the rebelling faction.  Those who lived to see another day recalled a 'golden eyed demon' on the battlefield.  

The teen prince comes back with the rebel leader's head.  The promise was fulfilled, so he demands his own troops and a larger residence in Anhak.

Daeseok obliges but From then on Jaeyoon become's the king's 'rabid dog'.  As a test of loyalty, he's continuously sent AROUND GURI to fend off invADERS, QUELL REBELLIONS, AND SILENCE NOBLES.  

however, The King's rabid dog is not loyal to the king.  Jaeyoon was acutely aware of his own position among the princes and princesses, and staying loyal to the king would only make him a servant rather than a full fledged royal.  However a battle for the throne was never something he wanted, nor was it something that would be wise.  So he sought to build his own power from behind the scenes, becoming an anonymous benefactor of the informant group the singing canaries.

(THREATS OF INVASION) Some time before the mongol invasion, borders of Guri –– After being sent to fix a minor skirmish at the northern borders, Jaeyoon is unceremoniously afflicted with injuries that would have otherwise been fatal.  The battle ends with a ceasefire and he's sent back to anhak palace.  Due to a pool of information from the canaries, Jaeyoon had figured out something big was about to happen at the borders.

Jaeyoon is in no state to warn the king of what is coming, and before he can, the invasion had started.  

He's sent with his siblings, other nobles, and citizens on a boat to a mysterious island.  He expects to come back and fight when he's healed up completely.

(secret garden) present, secret island –– Jaeyoon had healed completely weeks after arriving on the island.  But before he could go back on the boat towards guri, he's stopped by one of the advisors who tell him to stay so the enemy cannot track their movements.
