what about being a lady? it is never my choice to be born as a less privileged, and i am just trying my best to live. is it wrong wanting to live like a normal person? do i not deserve the right to breathe freely without having to worry about what would endanger my life right now?
the baby was soon named yeonhee. yeon taken from her mother, hee taken from her father.
the girl barely had memories of her own father for he always worked from day to dawn, getting little rest before heading out to work again. she had never seen his smiles, his words always cold and sharp, but bloodily brutal. she knew she is a girl, and a girl can never have opportunities, she can only pray for herself to get married off to a better household or stay in the slums for the rest of her life. she accepted that as her life, and started to help out for the family when she was able to do so. she cut her long hair for it to be sold to the places where gisaengs use it to make their wigs, worked at a butcher's place just to get leftover and unwanted meat parts for her hardworking parents to get something better to eat than just plain porridge and salted pickles. her life was at least peaceful, but still struggling when sometimes she could not get her hair grow quick enough or even no meat to be spared on some days.
it was until one day when the head of the gisaeng came over to the slums, eyes scanning around the girls on the streets and stopped on her who was working back and forth in the butcher's house. 'you, come over' the head of the gisaeng ordered, and she walked up front hesitantly not knowing what was going on. ‘you have a cute face. wanna join us?' she remembered looking up at the makeup and the fancy hair accessories on their gracefully bunned hair, she gulped at how different they looked from her. so beautiful and elegant, she almost said yes too quickly before anyone else could stop her and tell her what's going on. she was soon taken back to the gisaeng's place, given a fragrant shower in the petals and changed into beautiful silky clothes. the ladies even put on a bit of makeup on her only saying 'young faces don't need too much makeup, youth is your makeup.' her short hair was tied up into a smaller bun with hair accessories pinned to her head, and she was told her work would start from tonight. just as the head of gisaeng was leading her to the other room, she heard her parents running into the house while crying.
"what are you doing! your life will be ruined if you become a gisaeng!"
before the girl realize, the guards of the gisaeng house had dragged her parents out and the head of the gisaeng had a furious look on her face. she was then pushed into the room with many drunk men, all wearing silky clothes who are easily recognizable as the upper-class officials. she saw the other ladies seating in between them, drinking with them while allowing those men to have their hands all around them. when she finally realized what she's into now, a man had dragged her down and a girl's scream could be heard through the room, followed by the sobbing of two old parents outside the gisaeng house. ever since that day, the girl no longer had a smile on her face, the head of gisaeng praised her for her 'marvelous performance' on her first day of work and forced her to sign a contract with them. she was planning to make this girl the next generation of gisaeng, so that she could make even more money for them by attracting more customers.
the girl started to bring more money back home and the family can finally afford to eat something other than rice and rotten vegetables, but her parents could not be happy. especially knowing how that money was made, it was by their daughter selling her body to men who did not even deserve it. their precious daughter had become one of the most discriminated kinds of people, one being often deemed as fancy but worthless for the women were no longer and had been 'contaminated' by men. the contract was meant to last forever but she happened to see her father, the man who used to be cold against her, cried at nights when he was blaming himself for not being able to protect his own daughter. he was strict to her but he wanted nothing but the best for her, and it felt like his mistake to have let the daughter become a gisaeng who will no longer have her life being corrected to the right path. so one day she pretended to be a thief and stole all of the gisaeng's contracts, burning them all in order to have hers burnt as well (since she couldn't read which one was her name) and used that as a threat to let the head of gisaeng let her go. the cunning lady wanted to say more but without the contract, she could not retain yeonhee if not it would be regarded as illegal. yeonhee finally escaped from that hell of a place, but she also lost a job that could help with the family's living.
then one day when her father told her that he had found her a job to be a palace maid, she was so happy that she jumped around, but she also could not help but think how could her father have such extends to get her a job like that. it was until her neighbors told her how they witnessed her father kneeling for a saro royal to beg for a job for her. yeonhee felt her eyes getting wet again, but this time she could not let this perfect chance come to waste. she finally entered the palace to be a palace maid for the saro royals, but the palace had clear rules of not allowing girls who are 'filthy' to work in the palace. yeonhee knew immediately she had to lie, therefore she bribed the auntie who was supposed to check her, claiming that she had fallen off a horse that made her lost her ity but she was definitely a girl who never even had close contact with men. the auntie saw the girl being so pitiful yet eager to get this job so she accepted the bribery, even saying how she would keep this a secret because she had also a soft spot for girls who were always had it worse than boys. she got to secure her job but of course there were more things that she had to worry about: what if she met one of her previous customers? what if they revealed her identity? what if someone accidentally knew her secret? she knew her life would not be any easier even after being a palace maid, but when she thought about her parents, her heart would sting at how they had tried to give her a better life. she could not make their efforts go to waste.
