hermes is the son of zeus and maia, yet maia was told to hide hermes' identity or else he would be killed by hera. on the first night after his birth, he snuck away and stole half of apollo's sheep. in the morning, apollo was outraged. hermes having turned to a mature form after a single day ultimately gave apollo the first lyre for him to forgive the grievance. hermes is the god of messengers, thieves, and shepherds who is also known for his cunning abilities and swift feet as a thief.
in this mortal life, the titans presented hermes with the life they considered him to having been deserved. similar to his life as a god, his mother was victim to a horrible crime and he was created, but his father was not zeus. he was born into poverty which normalized both poverty and violence to him he had never before seen as a psychopomp delivering the rich to styx. however, a single gift of his has remained without needing to use his power: his speed. while his mortal mother had many flaws, it was hermes' second time to feel what true parental love felt like. however one night during a house robbery, diocles walked in on his mother being brutally stabbed for trying to protect herself and her son. he experienced a brief period of black out, and he found himself running across a bridge once he finally came to. he hasn't returned since, afraid of what he would find. otherwise, he is glad to be in the community of apartments, yet he is ashamed of his far lower social status than during his immortal life.
diocles currently makes his living following what he calls "contract jobs" affiliated with organized crime, however he despises following the leadership's orders. he has no desire to be caught due to the mistake of another member, so he only performs them when absolutely necessary. from day to day, he simply steals what he can to get by. don't approach him about his habit of stealing or else you may face consequences.
