markus had never been the favorite; in fact, he had never even been tended to nor acknowledged. everything was all about his older and younger brother— they were the lee's priceless jewels as his parents say. and it certainly held true even after michael's tragic death.
it was his fault, they blamed; and he knew too.
fifteen years ago. they were on the road. he can remember it clear as a day that they were headed to a nearby lantern festival, to participate in the pleasantries and watch the fireworks show. at the time, michael just turned 18 and got his license. he had a party early into the night and he was heavily drunk but not so much as to forget about markus' wish to see the lanterns and fireworks.
michael was a good brother, much more a man than his father was. and so they set out and escaped from the manor to fulfill his desire. in all honesty, markus outright refused but michael insisted that night. one moment they were happy, cruising through the streets to arrive on time for the show, then the next, everything blew up. literally.
markus watched as the smoke from their car bellowed darkly over the painted night sky. the fireworks, explosions, sirens deafening michael's cries. oh how markus crawled to take his brother out the flaming vehicle but to no avail.
ever since that tragedy, markus hated the fireworks. correction: feared. he never was eager to see them again and when he hears them, even from a distant, he suddenly feels shivers and sometimes falls into a repressive state.
as for his familial relationship, it grew worse— rather died on that same night. his once lovely younger brother too. but he can't blame them and he never did because they were right: he killed michael.
over the years, however, he learned to let go of that guilt. markus is a calculative and logical man. he realized the accident was just that— an accident; no one wished for it, no one wanted it. but even then, his family didn't listen.
so he did the next best thing— the only thing he could do. strive for authority and prestige to be granted an open heart or at least acknowledgement. months turned to years and soon he stood vice chairman of lee enterprises but it was all for vain.
nevertheless, markus has been recognized by the media as one of the most influencial and richest business man in their 30s especially after rising the tide of the company by a threefold.
