As children, Delilah “Lila” Lee and Olivia “Liv” Lee were two peas in a pod, birds of a feather, cheeks pressed together. Of course, how else would identical twins be? But despite the ridiculous difficulty of telling them apart by appearance, it was always their mannerisms that gave them away. Lila was the quiet role model, the one who carried the hopes and expectations of the parents, so it was actual child’s play for Liv to pretend to be Lila. On the other hand, Liv was energetic and whimsical, always ready for whatever adventure awaited her. Her devil may care attitude and sometimes reckless nature was often what gave Lila the disadvantage.

For as long as she can remember, Lila was always the responsible older twin sister. Because she was the first born, she was the first for everything: the first to oppose the idea of switching places, the first to get caught, the first to take the fall, the first to apologize. Of course it was troublesome but there was nothing she wouldn’t do for her sister Olivia.

This pattern would follow the twins as they matured. Lila always kept her nose in various books while growing up in small town in England and she was more than happy to stay there as a clinic receptionist. However, Liv grew bored with the monotony and aspired for stardom. As soon as they were through with high school and became legal adults, Lila stayed in her hometown while Liv departed for Hollywood, where ambitious dreams came true—supposedly.

In their decade apart, the twins frequently wrote to each other; Liv vented her struggles but reaffirmed her dreams while Lila updated her sister on the wellbeing of their ever-greying parents. True to her birth-given role, Lila often visited their parents in their retirement home and in turn passed on Liv’s regards. And while they loved their daughters equally, they couldn’t help but to worry more about Liv. Lila was a competent and independent adult but the baby was overseas alone.

And one day, it happened. Lila received a letter informing her about Liv’s death. She hadn’t been answering her phone and her agent found her hanging with a suicide note. On it was simply, “I’m sorry.” The letter itself, while addressed to Lila, was unsigned. Lila’s heart shattered instantly and of course, the weight of the news would be too much for their parents, especially since they were excited to hear about Liv’s recent “big break.”

So she decided it didn’t have to be that way.

Lila simply wouldn’t tell her parents about Liv’s death. Instead, she’d tell them about Liv’s big break, not as Lila but as Liv. Besides, what happened so suddenly that Liv decided this was the best course of action? Both conflicted and determined, Lila made her way to the States to follow in her sister’s footsteps. Not only would it allow her to keep her parents in blissful ignorance by updating them with letters as Olivia, it would give her the chance to discover what really happened to her sister in Hollywood.
