chapter one: pre-uni.
Grew up in Austria until his parents divorced. Studies between international schools in Austria and Seoul. [...]

chapter two: hyori, prosecution.
Dohyun met some students that he would keep as friends for years, neighbors eventually. One of them, none other than Go Hyori, became his best friend, girlfriend and best friend again. He was not the type to keep friends so very plural, if not with Hyori. Dohyun always preferred the company of one alone, entrusting one person with all his feelings, thoughts and dreams. His attention and care went all on her, usually working her mind until she would agree to anything he would wish for, be it the lunch delivery they would pick or the semester abroad he wanted to have.

If she could get free passes with him too, he could be stubborn about something and marriage became one: He was against it. The ghost of the sacrifices his mother had to make for the wedding to work left him on the fence about union based on love solely. It seemed like a lot of stress for nothing when he was about to become a Prosecutor. This ended in a breakup he blames himself for.

Marriage was never an issue, but he needed an ulterior motive for it. At least it’s only how he could explain it when a few years after his break up, he announced he would marry Kurosawa Mio.

chapter three: mio.
She did it, first day of the first murder trial. She gave Dohyun a motive for marriage but he only found out about it about three years later.

Kurosawa Mio was a grieving widow, battling in a murder trial and each second spent in that court room felt like they were all part of a painting, the kind that would be worth billions in a few years, the kind that would survive history books, rise and falls of empires. It was a dramatic piece no one was ready for, playing out for weeks of criminal investigations. She lied and she did so beautifully no evidence stood against. The calculation was so perfect law was on her side, no matter what Dohyun saw in her.

Prosecution was never made to counter the games of people with morals so out of check they looked like they made morals themselves. Still he carried his job on, brilliantly, playing his role where law loses to her schemes, inevitably. The first Act was over, too soon.

If the public was not sure of her implication in the murder of her first husband, Dohyun’s father was. His monitoring of the career-maker case had his old man scrutinizing the debates and evidence. It was his word that kept Dohyun from reaching out to the mysterious woman. After the second trial against the most cunning and daring murderer he ever met, no wide advice could keep him from hunting her down, in his own way.

The prosecutor’s intention to marry a widow ruled innocent twice was reported as shocking and unacceptable by some, and a dangerous choice to keep his enemies closer by most, for the coincidence of the passing of Mio’s two former husbands would only be ruled a pattern if he did not survive her. Dohyun attacked both kinds of statements, despite how much he related to both, only because they seemed to omit one major detail: he fell in love with Mio. He did and his many romantic gestures were never enough, not even before he announced he intended to marry her.

He never dared asking her if she loved him, but would never quit confessing to her. Even his proposal carried on for days, trying to get her attention whenever he would set a knee down, until he accepted she would never let him scheme the proposal. To this day, he cannot comprehend how she accepted, but she did.

chapter four: do mio.
outside of the 96th floor duplex apartment, they are royalty: a perfect couple. He is into grand gestures, into surprising her at work, into following her in her hunting trips, standing by when she fires, flinching but making it alive every time.

He is perpetually thankful to have survived that long, outlasting her prior husbands, and he doesn’t hide the fact that he has thus broken the curse. They are not into public displays of affection but a keen eye on them would notice Dohyun’s careful demands for affection from time to time, asking to hold her hand, asking her for a dance, leaning in slow enough to let her get away if she wants to before he gently kisses her cheek. The respect from the dating days never worn off.

now inside the confines of their high end estate, they are mr and mrs smith, cohabitation with a friendly foe. Dohyun loves her all the same, and she sometimes indulges in his need for affection, but honesty frees his tongue. When it’s just them, he can joke a little, call her those names he finds so much more fitting people would use derogatively: at home she is his murderer, his witch.

Sometimes, a knife in her hand is tremendously attractive and sometimes, it calls for him to do the cutting, and for her to do another chore. He stands between a sadistic love for danger and trusting her, but he does not regret his impulsive proposal. She is a beauty he does not deserve.
He was carrying neither a gun nor a knife. It was by his smile that I could tell he was a hunter.
