ailell could almost pass for a human, if someone didn't see the eyes and ears. though he's tall as elf blood dictates, his skintone reflects the distinctly human nature of his father. his eyes are a startling emerald, however, of a vibrance humans don't have, and his ears, while not as pointed as those of other elves, give his breeding away immediately. he has a smattering of tattoos, a notable one being the mortem skull tattoo on his left shoulderblade. 

ailell brier's mother and father were an elf and human couple that was rather strangely matched, but were happy. his father had left the ranks of a secret hunting organization called mortem when he met ailell's mother, and they settled down together after getting married. they were overjoyed when they found out they were expecting baby ailell, but of course, happiness couldn't last. ailell was a month old when his mother was murdered by other elves. his father came home in time to keep them from killing his son, but his wife was already gone.

stricken by grief and rage, driven to a point of madness, ailell's father bundled their child in a soft blanket and carried him into the night. he remembered one of the locations mortem where mortem was set up and that was where he took his child, raving to an old friend that he wanted to commit his son to a good cause that would raise him well. 

and then the widower slit his own throat, right in front of that same old friend and the month-old child that rested in his friend's arms.

all ailell had of his family was a small notebook his father had used as a journal. his father's friend raised him in the manner of mortem; ailell knew from a very young age that he was half-monster and that monsters deserved to die. but he disagreed, and mortem trainers beat him often for daring to voice his disagreements. ailell refused to be broken, however, no matter how many beatings he took.

ailell was young, still not yet a teenager, when he was dragged out on his first mission and forced to kill his first monster. it haunted ailell to the point that he tried to slit his wrists, but his father's friend caught him and beat him senseless when he'd recovered from the attempt. 

 

tw: suicidal ideation // 

years and decades passed and ailell was honed into a weapon by mortem, a weapon that sliced through other monsters and sank into a sinkhole of self-loathing. ailell craved death and feared it in terms, many times wondering, as his father's friend and other humans began to die around him, if he would get away with taking his own life now. but he didn't try again, which was spurred by a new change in his life... he was into the role of a teacher in squad 719. he wasn't yet made the leader, but he was 100 years old and he was the new squad trainer, the man responsible for sharpening the little innocent children into weapons. 

 

it didn't take long after that for ailell to become even more important to mortem. the head of squad 719 was killed on a mission and ailell stepped into the temporary role until he could get his child army back to their headquarters. the ascension to squad leader was made official by the head of mortem overall, and ailell found himself even more responsible for the children he was already raising and training. he was still their teacher, but now he was also their commander and their lives were in his hands and that pressure was a crushing weight.

ailell outlived all of his child soldiers. his brilliant, bright little minds that he had been forced to sharpen into weapons, all thrown away for the sake of evil humans who believed all monsters should be eradicated. they died young, so very young, and such gruesome deaths and there was nothing ailell could do to protect them for this was the nature of mortem. but with each loss that he suffered, ailell found himself wishing that his usefulness had run dry and mortem would finally let him end his suffering, for it never got easier to realize he had lost another of his precious students. but each time, they dragged him back and punished him for it.

 

ailell's current group of child soldiers, he vowed, would be his last. as soon as he had little mu lian tucked into his arms, smiling at him with gap teeth, he swore to himself that he would end this one way or another; whether he killed himself, died on a mission or was executed by mortem, he would not outlive another batch of mortem's wayward children. he raised them, and they were the first ones to call him their father, the first to attach themselves to him as fiercely as he had unknowingly attached himself to them, and ailell secretly thought of them as his children even as he protested. and as they grew, he feared each time they were sent on missions, each time he watched them go; he feared that they wouldn't return.

but when mu lian died, it wasn't a mission at all that killed her, and the loss—it might as well have killed ailell.

leads & trains his squad and handles squad 719's communication with the head of mortem itself.

 

ailell has been in mortem for 202 years. he has garnered respect simply for the long list of kills that trails behind him and his legendary abilities to juggle training kids, doing his own missions, and leading a squad successfully. there's some distaste toward him for being half-elf, but ailell mostly ignores it.  

 

ailell is the dad figure and everyone knows it and he protests (even though he knows he's dad).
