At one point, Shinhye was the new girl in town. She was a sickly child so it was recommended by a doctor that her family move out of the city to somewhere with fresher air and a slower pace. Despite it being so long ago, she remembers the day they moved like it was yesterday: the cool ocean breeze blowing her hair as she peered out the moving truck window, the curious and sometimes delighted faces that passed in a blur as they drove to their new apartment, and the overwhelmingly warm welcome they recieved.

The village head and his family came over and helped with move-in, along with the few other residents of the newly-built complex. Shinhye remembers how her mother couldn't stop smiling and how the woman said, "it's already starting to feel like home!" little Shinhye didn't agree. She missed her friends from Seoul. She didn't like the bugs that flew around everywhere. She wasn't happy about the move at all.

That sentiment was quickly diminished though by the time that Shinhye started school the following week. She'd made quite a few friends really quickly and she got to go on fun adventures with her dad pretty much every weekend. Between the mountains, the beach, and her new friends, Haereung began leaving its mark on Shinhye. Over the years, her health improved and she got through school rather easily. She even became the class president for two years in middle school and one in high school.

By the time that she graduated high school, Shinhye knew very well what she wanted to do after college: be a teacher. She always loved kids and it just seemed like the perfect fit. Haereung has no universities, so she had to move away to complete her education. Despite living in the city for the first quarter of her life, it had become very foreign to Shinhye and she almost dropped out due to homesickness. Good friends, letters and phone calls from home, and occassional adventures through the city with Donggu whenever he made the trip to see her were what kept her sane in her time away from home. Shinhye eventually got her degree in childhood education and returned to Haereung to both spearhead the remodelling of the old primary school AND become their kindergarten teacher.

Today, Shinhye is still a teacher and happily so. When she isn't at work, she helps the Yoon family organize village events and she volunteers at the hospice where her mother is staying. She also likes pottery, flower arranging, singing, and going on walks with Donggu and Danbi. She's a very family-oriented and kind person, but she's not one to be pushed around. On occasions when people, mostly Donggu, let other people push them around, she's quick to step in and put an end to that. Most frequently as of late, she steps in when her more sensitive half is badgered about a proposal or children and firmly assures the nosy neighbor that they're happy where they are. While the proposal bit is true, they both quietly deal with qualms at the fact that she can't get pregnant due to early onset menopause in her early twenties.
