the kim family had lasted four generations of wealth that is still flourishing until now. starting from lumber and scrap metal to now having a construction company. they also manufacture their own raw materials and export their products to other countries.

 

at the helm of the international corporation is kim jiwoo, the current chairman of the board and is the father to kim seunghwan (24) and kim sieun (21). he is a very driven man and does almost anything to get what he wants and expand his family's empire. know as the shark of the industry who is known to harm anyone who gets in his way, he also has a very similar way disciplining his children.

 

the one who had it the worst was seunghwan. as the expected heir, he had to go through lengths to keep up with his father's expectations for him. his mother, kim miyeon, was no better. miyeon had always been looked down on by her in-laws because she had came from a receding old rich family that was only a shadow of its former self. this had lead the mother to be strict with seunghwan since his birth had cemented her place as jiwoo's wife.

 

seunghwan had to tirelessly go to school, cram and was expected to excel in everything he did. and he didn't disappoint as well. he was naturally gifted and had the makings of a great leader which was exactly the qualities that jiwoo had expected from a son he would name his heir.

 

it has been long believed that in the kim family, a first born son would always elevate their family farther than the previous generation. this was true for their father, jiwoo, who was a firstborn. he had expanded their company across international waters and made their company go public which multiplied their wealth immensely.

 

apart from a son, the kim couple had also wanted to have a daughter and this had lead them to believe they were beloved by the heavens since sieun came into their lives. it was as if the gods were listening to anything they had wished and this, had made both of them felt even more entitled to their wealth and status.

 

growing up, all sieun had ever felt was love. both of her parents had not made her feel any pressure since she did not have to shoulder the responsibility of the company on her shoulders. she was set to be anything she wanted to be in her life as long as she married into what they beieved was the right kind of family.

 

sieun was always coddled and  spoiled. anything she asked for, she could have. even though there was a difference in preference between her and her brother, she was just happy to not receive the same pressure as him. they were very close though and she had looked up to her older brother very much. in her eyes he could do no wrong.

 

he was one of the sweetest brothers and spoils her along with her parents. anything he had or recieved, he also wanted one for sieun. this had lead her to receiving twice as many gifts as seunghwan got which he did not mind at all.

 

everything was perfect until one day, sieun woke up to her screaming and bawling mother in the hallway, crouched up. her father was walking into his study, making exasperated calls. she had no idea what was happening until her nanny took her back into her room and explained what had happened. her brother ran away.

 

from then on, sieun no longer felt loved by her parents as they were slowly changing how they had treated her. a few days after their perfect son ran away, they found out that he had ran to a monastery and was refusing to come back. they  gave him an ultimatum to come back or lose everything that was supposed to be his but he rejected their offer. this was the start of sieun's life turning upside down.

 

she was now the one doing the cramming and barely sleeping in a day just to catch up on academics, learning subjects she thought she will never need in her life. she wasn't dumb but the disparity between her and seunghwan academically was very evident. seunghwan was a straight a student while sieun was just a b+ to A- student. and for the kims this was not enough, especially because she was a woman.

 

this had left their family hierarchy in shambles because her uncles and their sons were fighting for the spot that was now dropped on to sieun's shoulders. she would go days without eating properly because she was studying everything she could just to at least be a fourth of the son seunghwan was.

 

this has caused her great emotional and mental stress. her nanny had seen her through it all and it was painful to her. anytime she had gotten any recognition, it would leave her mother in an emotional wreck or sometimes in an outburst because it wasn't enough. sieun already knew this was because of her grandmother who was very critical over miyeon's parenting. the latter was putting so much pressure on sieun because of this.

 

sieun had gotten thinner than before. graduating high school wasn't even an enjoyable event in her life. she had suddenly changed into an aloof girl who no longer had any time with the friends she chose since she was only ever allowed to interact with the peers her father had selected for business purposes.

 

somehow, she understood why seunghwan left but it had still caused her emotional trauma. being left alone in a world with parents who easily turned their backs on her just because of her gender and for the decision of a son that did his best for them made her feel like she was chained to her wealth and pristige. she had everything but she was no longer happy.

 

this had lead her to feel lonely and alone. she could do nothing about it but push through the path she was forced to walk in. she had long since abandoned her dreams of becoming a fashion designer and owning her own clothing empire. she had abandoned all thoughts of still owning her life because it now belonged to the kims. the longer she stayed in her predicament, the more she felt like her life was never hers to begin with. she was a misgendered spare heir. the now unwanted second.

 

everything she does now is in the name of her father. she had suffered and went through too much and will continue to, she knows it now. and this alone made her feel like her stepping on everyone else just to get what she wanted was justified. 

all she had now was herself to count on. the emotional strain that abandonment and neglect that she had suffered through for almost two years now had brought her to a point of no return. she had changed. she no longer smiled the way she used to and if she did, it was always the fake one that she used as a facade.

 

"Do what you must" as her father says. "you are my heir now. act like it."
