Background: Born in the West, Hongjoong, at a pretty young age, started a small business with a friend of his older brother. Things were going very well for a while until he learned that this friend of his brother, that he considered a friend as well and even someone like an older brother, was actually doing deals with people involved in organized crime in the East, and had been for a while. He pretended not to know for as long as he could but couldn't pretend any longer when he became aware of this so-called hyung using him for collateral. After a big deal of theirs fell through, Hongjoong woke one morning in a room he didn't recognize surrounded by a number of unfamiliar faces. No matter how many times he said he knew nothing about the deals, which wasn't a complete lie, none of the men there seemed to believe him or even cared to listen. Held captive from his family and friends, Hongjoong ended up being used and abused, made to be nothing but a toy. It wasn't until months later that his brother learned the truth and even then it still took a little over a year before Hongjoong was actually saved. The details about how everything happened and how his older brother rescued him are still extremely blurry but he's forever grateful to his brother and holds a deep thread of resentment towards the guy he once treated like a dear friend and big brother.

Once upon a time, Hongjoong was looked to as a very talented up-and-coming entrepreneur, especially for his age. He had companies lining up to bring him in to their ranks to boost their businesses but, when he disappeared, Hongjoong kept it that way, staying in the East where he'd been taken. He didn't reach out to anyone. Thanks to his brother, he stayed quite undercover and hidden from what he began to refer to, and still refers to, as "the surface world." As much as he wanted to get out and socialize, he would get terrible anxiety and make up every single excuse not to go anywhere. He would only really go out at night and wouldn't travel too far. One night, he signed up for an open mic that he used to vent out the bits of poetry and makeshift lyrics he'd been writing for a while, a therapy method he'd been suggested to help him work on getting over his past trauma. After a few open mic nights, a band looking for a songwriter and a lead singer approached him and it took a bit of persuading but he eventually joined and ended up being very glad that he did. For the time being, he and his rock band, Crown for the Preachers, keep their music underground and just do it for expression. They aren't looking to really go big, at least not for the time being.
