Ⅰ ⸺ THE REAWAKENING
He does not know how long he spent in that darkness; the space between life and death. Unaware of anything - unseeing, unfeeling - in a vague nonexistence only permeated by the occasional whisper that something was amiss.
If this was to be his punishment for the wrongs he had committed while alive - this eternity in the pitch black, frozen and alone till the end of time - then so be it.
He would accept it.
The world, however, had different plans for him.
His first breath after dying is a shuddering gasp. It's a miracle, the fact that he can even breathe at all. He remembers the heat of the flames; the thick black smoke in his lungs, choking him until he could no longer take in even an ounce of precious air.
But he is breathing now. It's cold, ice in his throat, and he welcomes the shard-like pain.
He opens his eyes to find that he is no longer inside that small room of the Oegyujanggak. Instead, the dark walls and tall ceiling of a small chamber are what greet him. To his left is a scroll, something familiar to him. There's a quiet, buzzing energy running through his fingers as he takes the scroll and carefully unfurls it. He's not sure what he was expecting, but it certainly wasn't something so fantastical as this.
Ⅱ ⸺ THE BYGONE PAST
Sometimes they say all you need is love;
but what use is love without trust?
[ tw: implied harsh punishment towards children ]
Yu Yongsik grew up in a loving home, once, which was rather hard to find amongst the upper echelons of the yangban. He was born into a noble family, and raised with only the finest education. He never went hungry, never felt too cold. Perhaps his father was overly strict, yes; a frequent user of corporal punishment on both his son and daughter. And yes, his mother never did much to stop it, but things weren't always so bad. All in all, it was a rather cushy and priveleged lifestyle.
His strongest relationship by far was with his younger sister, whom Yongsik got along with splendidly, as she did with him. Two peas in a pod, their parents would say - two birds of a feather, as observed by everyone else. Some of his fondest memories from childhood involve them playing together in the yard, eating sweet tteok under the cherry blossom trees and swimming in the warm pond behind their family estate.
The two of them eventually grew into exemplary young adults. Yongsik, who had a fondness for literature, was set on persuing a life as a scholar; much to his father's chagrin, who wanted Yongsik to follow in his footsteps down the path of a military officer. It was a source of contention between the father and son for a long time, but eventually his father gave up when Yongsik managed to land a position in the Kyujanggak as a royal scholar. It was around this same time that Yongsik's parents also urged him to marry since he had come of age. Yongsik refused, citing a love for his work as a scholar. His parents continued trying to persuade him, and even attempted to set up a few arranged marriages, all of which Yongsik managed to get out of. After a few years his parents once again gave up on forcing him to marry, if only because his younger sister had finally come of age, and so they turned their attention towards her to marry for the family.
His sister was betrothed to a man from a lesser noble family. It was within the Yu family's interest to have her marry down so that she would retain a higher status in the marriage. They had a summer wedding. Yongsik was present, though he doesn't remember much. The couple seemed happy enough together, perhaps even in love, though with something arranged it was always hard to tell.
For the first six months after his sister's marriage things in the house remained much the same. Besides the differences of his sister and her husband being moved to another section of the estate together, and the addition of a few new servants, nothing changed. Yongsik still continued his work at the royal library, and when he was at home he could often be found working late into the night, poring over scrolls and books to his heart's content in the family's personal library. It was during one of these late night's that Yongsik was approached by his sister's husband.
It was the first time he had been propositioned by the man.
[ tw: adultery, borderline ual coercion ]
"I've seen the way you look at me."
"That's not- I have not been-"
Yongsik is ashamed to say that although he rejected the man's advances, he was not entirely unaffected by them. Nor the several times after this first instance when he was continuously approached. Usually late at night; always when his sister was asleep, or not present at the estate. He is even more ashamed to admit that after months of these visits and attempts at persuasion, he did the one thing that he never shuold have done: he gave in.
Lips against his neck, just underneath his jaw.
Where he once shuddered away from the touch he now
found it intoxicating, painfully so.
He felt the man smile against his skin,
beginning to kiss further up.
"You're different tonight."
He did not say a word,
but he also did not attempt to push the man away.
"Will you let me? This time?" The voice was amused,
and he closed his eyes;
he did not want to see the satisfaction upon
the man's face as he nodded.
That night marked the true beginning of Yongsik's biggest regret in life. For a long period of months he had an affair with his sister's husband behind her back. Stolen nights spent in the estate's personal library. Fleeting moments of quick kisses behind walls, and evading suspicion even when nearly being caught during several instances. At first the arrangement was purely ual in nature, but soon Yongsik began to have feelings for the man that were distinctly romantic. He was in love, and he was sick with it.
more to come...
(bullet points until i have enough presence of mind to make fancy words on keyboard thank you)
- his military official father aided in the persecution of catholicism in south korea which began in 1791
- his sister is younger than him, and they are only a handful of years apart in age
- the affair last(s) from several months, possibly a year or even longer. then his sister finds out about the affair
- there is arguing among the sister and her husband, yongsik and his sister, and yongsik and the husband
- (his sister discovering the affair and learning of her brother's betrayal is what will eventually become the reason for her being made into a reaper)
- the husband ends up betraying the both of them further by attempting to steal from the family treasury and escape the estate in the middle of the night. (it is unknown whether this was his original intention or not)
- before the husband can escape yongsik discovers him in one of the estate halls. the husband attacks yongsik with a spear stolen from the weaponry, cutting across the bridge of his nose and over his right eye. this leaves yongsik partially blinded.
- (this is the betrayal that ends up becoming the reason for yongsik being made into a reaper (the husband absconding with family money, partially causing the rift between yongsik and his sister, and because yongsik felt like the man had used his love in order to take advantage of yongsik and his family)
- the day after the husband escapes his parents learn of the affair and their son's proclivity towards men
- yongsik is banished to the smallest section of the estate furthest away from the main grounds and any servants or guests. he is only allowed to leave the estate for work at the royal library

6. out of character
1
INTRODUCTION Hi! My name is Melo; you can also call me by my character name(s) if you wish. I live in GMT-5/EST and you'll mostly see me in the mornings and possibly late at night due to my job, unless it's the weekend. If you're interested in making a connection between our characters or starting an RP thread, please read the rest of this section first!
2
POV PREFERENCES I only roleplay using 3rdPOV ranging from semi-para, paragraph to novella. The longer the post the longer it takes me to reply, though I do tend to slip into novella when I have a lot of muse. I do my best to mirror but this is not necessary in your responses to me as long as you give me something I can work with. Note: I can sometimes be a very slow replier, so if you prefer quick responses I'm not the best choice for a writing partner.
3
ROLEPLAY PREFERENCES Plotting is preferred since it gives me more confidence in my threads, however I am open to winging as well! I just ask that if you plan on including any rated M or potentially triggering content to please discuss it with me first. I don't appreciate being thrown into the deep end without warning.
My location preferences are ROOM > WALL > PM. In fact, I rarely if ever have threads on walls or in private messages, since I usually reserve those for OOC content.
(Also, sometimes I post random starters in rooms when I have a lot of muse. Feel free to respond to any of these if they're open! However, again, if you plan on incuding any rated M or potentially triggering content please discuss it with me first.)

4
DOS & DON'TS Please don't "poke" me for a response if it's taking me awhile to reply. I don't usually forget things, I just get busy or overwhelmed sometimes and can't get to them right away. That being said, if it's been longer than two (2) weeks, feel free to contact me.
On the topic of romance/ I don't roleplay these genres outside of people that I'm comfortable with. This may also apply to certain rated M/potentially triggering topics. I ask that you please respect this.
If at any point in our thread you wish to change something or drop it altogether, please notify me! I will also endeavor to do the same.

EXTRA NOTES Recently I've decided that I will be taking 1 to 2 days breaks a week from roleplaying in order to let myself rest and catch up on other things as lately I've been coming quite close to burnout. I may still pop in and chat, or even make replies on these days, but in general please don't expect much from me on Sunday and Thursday.
