Madelaine wasn't born to be the Head of the House of Arryn. She'd been the first of many daughters and one son. Madelaine has always been ambitionous and sly minded. Everything the Vale touched, she wanted. She would sneak away from womenly studies, so easedrop on her brother's classes. She'd read books her father only allowed her brother to touch. As she grew older, she spoke out more and more in court, giving her the reputation of being untamable and wily. Her father didn't appreciate her outspokenness, especially when she underminded his rule with a better solution. 

Her father wanted to marry off all his daughters to various houses outside of the Vale with the purpose of strengthening political ties, and he couldn't do that if her reputation made it hard to marry her off. Only men that liked to break women would want her. For as stuck in the old ways as he was, her father still loved her and wanted her married off to a man that would treat her well. He didn't live long enough to see it happen. He felt ill of a sickness that ravaged the Vale. No one knows where it came from, but many got sick and died, including her parents and brother. The head of house should have gone to her uncle, but she didn't trust him in a seat of power, so she used the illness as a distraction to rid the Vale thoses that wanted to take her seat.

She took the position as head of house and has kept the Vale safe from outside influence for the last two years.
