Background: Tao would never say that he grew up living a sheltered life. He knew things happened in the world that people just didn't have control over sometimes. Some things were bad while others were enlightening; With both types of connections, there was the chance that they could never fully fade. He could say he's had a copious amount of both with scarring that he knows he'll remember for the rest of his life. He didn't consider himself anything particularly special when he was younger, comfortable in his own skin though and sure that he'd eventually find his place one day. He'd always been the type to take chances, to go for the gold, to accept risks and challenges. Meeting a girl about his age that needed help was just another thing to do that just made sense to him. Except, this time around, it wouldn't be just a chance meeting and they never saw one another again. Their worlds were chained together in the blink of an eye and he would eventually find his heart eternally marked by her. Amber was and will always be someone he can say he looked up to at one point. She kept her head on straight and followed through with everything that she planned to do. They met one day while he was working in the West at a family friend's shop, just helping them clean up. She had come from the East, trying to find her older sister who had disappeared. He saw her in the alleyway behind the building for days, weeks, at a time when he would take the trash out to the big receptacle. He eventually asked her what she was doing and didn't hesitate to offer his help. She didn't think there was anything he could do and, quite frankly, neither did he but, even to this day, he explains it as him just being drawn to her. Amber hadn't seemed like she needed help or was desperate for a handout but the way she accepted his offered would have made someone think otherwise.
He followed her around for years, learning from her, who was a sharp-shooting elite assassin from the East. Tao wasn't as accurate a shooter at her but he was quick on the draw, as well as in combat and strategy. Together, they became an unstoppable force. It was never right to see one without the other. If you didn't see them together, they weren't far apart from each other. They were a team. They bounced around from West to East, seemingly always on the run, although the search for her sister played a big factor for a short time as well. Eventually, their team grew to a set of four with the addition of the Zhang twins, Da-long and Xiao-long. Things only grew that much more complicated from here. The twins typically handled the clean ups after Tao and Amber's jobs but, as time went on, there mixes on a more personal and intimate level amongst them. Tao's relationship with Amber when it came to intimacy had never been clear. On most nights when they found themselves getting that close, something got in the way, namely their own minds. As they saw other people over the years, their connections with the twins (Tao with Da-long and Amber with Xiao-long) only seemed to make matters more difficult, especially when it came out that Da-long had connected with them under the guise of just helping them, although he'd been a spy set in place to take Amber out. In finding out the truth, even with Da-long himself helping them, Amber found out her sister had been killed. From what she knew, seom guy named Jiyong, also known more often as Dragon, had ben the cause of it. Tao decided to help in getting more details so his best friend would finally be able to piece together everything. He came up with the plan that they plant someone in his ranks to find out the truth. Before they could finally get the final pieces together, Amber ended up losing someone she cared for in an ambush, Jong Jin. He died in her arms and Tao knows for sure that was the day that everything really changed for her, for them and everything that would follow that day. Although Amber seemed to be holding it together for years after that, the final icing on the cake was Tao being jumped and drugged with a street drug that had been going around, and while it was still in its very dangerous experimental phase. Coming that close to death and having her doing everything in her power to bring him through, they found themselves in an even closer relationship although almost having Tao die in her arms wasn't something she was coping with very well. Her mental health began to spiral and it had a ricochet effect on everything they'd built together. Tao decided to finally separate himeslf from her, even if it would just be for a short period of time. Leaving her alone in her time of need didn't sit right with him but he figured it would also finally force her to get help, the kind that she wouldn't take or accept from him.
Over the years, in the midst of it all, he'd technically become father to a number of kids. Amber's first few kids, three brothers adopted after a mission where they had to kill the kids' parents, had spent a lot of their toddler and child years with him but, as things grew strained, it became much harder for them to be around one another. He's heard that they ask for him and he asks about them, too, whenever he can get the chance, especially with Amber now being in a mental hospital. Tao is still in contact with Da-long, who watches all of Amber's kids as their father, including the fourth, another adopted child by Amber and her first daughter, and the fifth, a daughter she'd actually had with Da-long. Tao does have two children, Daehyun and Mei Lien, adopted with his partner at the time Niel. Although the two aren't together anymore, they co-parent as if nothing ever changed between them.
Tao managed to walk away from his life as a freelance assassin some years back and, in trying to find another job, found a company with a mission that just felt right to him. He now works for Bridge Real Estate, a company that focuses solely on finding homes for those moving from the East to the West and even in some special cases from the West to the East, particularly someone that has lost out on life somehow. BRE works to find the best affordable and safe options, known mostly among those that cross the tracks.
