「 backstory  」 TW: Mentions of Death

Brøken debuted in 2021

Woo Kyungjun was born and raised in Sydney, Austrailia by the parents being named Woo Haeun and the father as Woo Dongmin, met with a handsome son that day. As he slowly started to grow up, by now he's about five years old, he briefly recalls his mother singing some songs, strutting a guitar as he'd seemed to be enjoying herself. Kyungie had watched his mother with admiration multiple times till Haeun had spotted her son peeking out from behind a wall, motioning him over to her. He'd gazed over with curious puppy eyes, silently and obediently following, going to stay a seat down next to his mother, staring once more. He'd chuckled at the sight and kissed his forehead, ruffling his hair causing Kyungie to grin upon the action.  The mother continued to play her guitar and sung. This went on for awhile on the weekends and Kyungie ended up learning the words, slowly singing along and clapping to the beat. His mother cooed at the sight and suggested that he should start taking lessons, and thankfully the woman even knew a friend that would be perfect for the opportunity. Kyungjun had enjoyed the extra classes that he'd take.. but it didn’t feel like enough? So with his parents permission, he quit the sessions. Did he perhaps know what he wished to be when he grew up? Maybe… but then again, one’s dreams could change at any given time.

This day was only one of the worst for Kyungjun… his father had gotten a peculiar phone call from the cops stating that his mother, Woo Haeun, had passed away in a terrible airplane crash on the way back home from a business trip. It had started to storm horribly while the plane was already en route in the sky and couldn’t find a safe way to land.. eventually a lightning strike hit the wing of the plane and it began to crash down into the ocean. The look on Dongmin’s face said it all.. as he’d put the phone down,  Kyungjun knew something wasn’t right.
“Dad…? Is everything okay? When is Mom coming home?”
…..
He didn’t know how to put it in the correct words without scaring his son, or worse.
“Kyungjun dear.. your Mom isn’t returning from her trip. She’s dead. “
Out of any way he could’ve shared the bad news, did it really have to be stated bluntly?
That day. November 5th, 2010 was when he felt as if his heart broke into a million pieces. Kyungjun froze in his spot just for a few moments, before falling to his knees from sitting at the couch, bursting into tears knowing his mother is gone. Why did the universe decide to take her from the world? She was so sweet, and Kyung had been pretty close with her. His father, on the other hand, despite not being too close with his son, he knew he had to help him.. help Kyungjun know that he's not alone. Kyungjun clung to his father while he cried and he’d pat his back and tell him that everything is going to be okay.
“Your mother will always be with you.. always in your heart, okay? Don’t ever forget that. She loves you.” All Kyungjun could do was nod as he stayed silent.

After that terrible day 5 years ago, the dynamics at home weren’t the same anymore. Kyungjun's father started to distance himself by barely being home doing who knows what, while Kyungjun had been left alone for multiple hours a day, to the point where he'd have to stay at a close friend’s house to normally eat meals, and communicate with other people… ones who actually cared about him, despite not being related. But honestly speaking, he'd stay locked up in his bedroom or his friend’s guest room, broken.. his mother had basically been his best friend AND parent so that truly had to hit hard. Kyungjun had chosen to stay at his best friend’s house for Christmas this year, and his friend + family were perfectly okay with it, they’d basically wanted to adopt Kyungjun as their own child. At around afternoon time, there had been a knock at the door, nobody was expecting anybody, right?
The friend’s father curiously went over to the front door, calling at a ‘hello?’ to see if anyone would answer. Pure Silence. “ hello? It’s the cops, please open up.” An unknown male voice had called out and the friend’s dad had to follow the request, so he opened the entrance door to let the officers in. “Is there a Woo Kyungjun staying here by any chance?”
All the other people in the room instantly turned to gaze at him, causing him to frown at the many looks. The officer noticed the body language from the others in the room and went over to Kyungjun.
“ hello, you must be Kyungjun right? I am Officer Kim, but you may call me Changmin if you wish. I’m here to tell you that your father has been arrested for a few drug charges and attempted murder..”
What the . Kyungjun wanted to scream and cry right then and there. It seems like his world broke… again. The boy sat at the sofa and stayed quiet, not even looking at the cop speaking to him, almost as if he zoned out.
“I’m going to need you to come with me, with your stuff, we need to relocate you to foster care, unless you have other family relatives who can take care of you?”
He didn’t. He never really met anybody on his mother’s side, well there’s his mom’s sister but he has zero idea where she is. He didn’t know too much about her other family, those on Dongmin's side, which is odd. Kyungjun held back his tears, his rage towards his father for technically abandoning his. He must’ve lost it after Kang Haeun’s death, he’d been alright..? when he was still alive, but close folks deaths can change people.
Kyungjun didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know what to say. He suddenly felt a few pairs of arms wrap around him and hug him.. saying that everything will be okay. Funny… he'd been told those exact same words before, and things didn’t quite turn out okay, huh? Will it really be okay? Does he want to trust fate?
I guess this it it. What’ll happen to him now? Who will take care of him until he's an adult? Only life knows that answer.

Kyungjun sniffled, he tried his best to not tear up too much, but is it out of disappointment? Anger? Upset? Depressed? How about all four? Best he could do was stay quiet unless he'd unintentionally state something he'd regret.. that’s what best anyways. He'd listened to the officer by pulling away from the little group hug and heading upstairs to collect his belongings, heading back down the steps not too long afterwards where he saw ‘Officer Kim,’ talking with the friend’s family. He shared his hugs and goodbyes to the sweet family, as well as his friend as the officer led him out of the house and into the cop car.
Many thoughts flowed through Kyungjun's mind.. he was forced to leave the only place he could rightfully call home.
“ I’m sorry I had to do this, but it’s for your own good.. I’m going to take you to a foster care, okay? They can take care of you there.” The officer had explained, basically notifying Kyungjun as to what is to be expected, what to and not to do, until they arrived where he'd been checked in and dropped off.. all alone in an unfamiliar environment, oh what more could she go through?

Kyungjun ended up living in the foster care for a couple of years, occasionally getting visits from her friend, until the bud had quit going. He'd also developed an interest in drumming and wanting to actually do something with her life. The owner of the building had been fairly nice to Kyungjun, and noticed her jamming it out to a song while rocking it out mentally in her mind. The owner lady smiled at the sight and decided to approach Seulgi and explain to her that there’s a music company holding auditions soon and felt like Kyungjun is capable of doing this, despite the loss of what he's been through… so Seulgi listened and auditioned, successfully joining the company a bit after he turned 20.
