as someone who dislikes discussing the past, taeyang is very quiet about his upbringing and early life. last he knew his father is retired and still lives in seoul, his mother passed away before he graduated, and he hasn't seen his brother in over a decade. he got good grades, but failed the civil service exam. his first relationship was with a girl who he remembers by her vanilla chapstick and cherry blossom body spray, but not her name—his second was with a guy whose name he won't say, but he can still quote his demeaning last texts from memory. his first home away from home was a hand-me-down kia with all his belongings stuffed into the trunk.
all these details are ones he usually only lets slip when he's drunk. they don't have a place in his day-to-day.
instead, he once enjoyed focusing on the now. he's self-made, owner of his own business, someone who would do anything to realize his dream. anything. he had the good fortune to make connections with someone who helped him achieve his goals. with one man's help he went from running his small cosmetics business from his rundown one bedroom apartment, to operating a single boutique storefront in uptown with a home address to match it. perhaps, however, he made a mistake in mixing business and romance after three years of unrequited longing.
while he won't openly discuss it with almost anyone, it's clear that there is something bothering him. he drinks more than he used to, he often looks puffier in the face in person than in his photos, he won't show his bareface at all, and at times his laugh seems hollow. press him on it and if he doesn't cry, he'll laugh it off as the common plight of a queer man.
