Hotaru was born in Osaka and from a young age was pushed into dance companies. As it happened, she had a natural talent for dance, able to improve at a rapid rate, although her voice always lacked a little. At the age of 10 she was accepted into a middle school themed idol group, named Girl School (GS for short) and she quickly gained attention for her strong dance skills, despite the easy choreography, and her love of everything frog themed, earning herself the nickname Keroko.

At 14 she was one of 4 girls selected for GS's 'exchange program' and was sent to South Korea for six months. In this time she took part in training with Korean trainees, and helped Girl School create a reality show about new Japanese trainees making their place in South Korea. After the six months, she returned to Japan and recorded a single with the three other girls to show their improvements.

Eventually, Hotari reached 19, and she wanted more of challenge, at least that’s what she told everyone. In reality she’d found herself being followed home from shows by a man who would harass her family constantly trying to find a way to get in contact with Hotaru. To get away from him and ‘challenge herself’, she graduated from Girl School to the disappointment of the fans she'd gained over her nine years in the group. She began auditioning for various overseas companies.

Soon she found Lotus Entertainment and passed all rounds of their auditions and became a trainee under Lotus Entertainment at the age of 20, glad to be away from Japan and her stalker.
