chapter one

This was the beginning of it all. The cool Winter snow fell hard on the morning Liesel von Nacht entered the world, her doe eyes sparkling like night stars and clinging her tiny hands tight onto her parents' pinkies. She was the embodiment of their eternal love, binding two lovers together forever as their perfect miracle child set the path forth for the rest of their lives. They knew from the moment she stirred and kicked within her mother's womb that they'd do anything and everything to bring this little girl into greatness.

Born in Hamburg, Germany with a German father and Korean–American mother who were happily married, life began simple. Yet quickly another baby came, and another after that, and little Liesel found herself the eldest of three children. While she was just as cherished as her other siblings by their parents, it became clear that she was being molded into the perfect daughter. She had to become the leader, the guider, the protector, the responsible one. At first it all seemed so daunting as she carried her baby brother and sister in her arms, then demanding to hold each of their hands on the sidewalk so they'd never get lost, watching them grow over the years into their own special identities.

But who was she? After so much time taking on the duties of a loving caring older sister, she'd lost all sense of what it meant to be an individual. There was no time to want, no thought to dream. Only work hard, study harder, and support her siblings as she ushered them into their coming of age right alongside their parents. Even with the encouragement Mama Gaeun and Papa Fritz gave, begging her to take part in extracurricular activities or afterschool clubs, she often refused. It was much more important to take her little sister Zelda to dance class on time or pick up little brother Klaus' bandmates so they could practice after school while their parents both worked endlessly at their jobs to support the family.

Their unorthodox family were anything but normal. Deemed strange for their Neopagan beliefs and notably macabre creative expressionism, the von Nachts indulged in their personal values and embraced their uniqueness. While her mother nurtured her with love, support, and spirituality her father encouraged Liesel to dive deep into her artistic creativity. Even if she wasn't quite as active or social as her younger counterparts, it was clear that she had her own gifts they hoped to pull out from her busy mind.

It was clear that she found a passion in fashion as she collected magazines, pinned photos of beautiful models in stunning couture on her bedroom walls, and begged her parents for a sewing machine on her birthday. Soon what began as little experiments with fabric and old clothes in her wardrobe expanded into a small business where she upcycled thrifted clothing and created custom pieces to sell online in her spare time. Perhaps she finally found something she was good at and, with her parents full support, accepted a scholarship to Yonsei University in Seoul to study fashion design.

Suddenly she found herself in the big city so far away from home and her family, excited for the future to come. Yet even as she made new friends and threw herself deep into her classes, young Liesel was still so unsure of herself. Could she hold a candle to all the other students who had more talent, more connections, more funding to boost their future careers? Would a small no name like herself truly survive in this industry on her merits alone? Right as these negative thoughts began chewing away at her mind, a stranger suddenly approached her with an opportunity too good to be true.

chapter three

trigger warning: eating disorder & financial struggles with poverty.

"You have the look," the man exclaimed as he handed Liesel a business card. "Can you dance? Sing? Come to our auditions this Friday. We can make you a star." He was a recruiter from a small practically unknown entertainment agency, but he painted the company as one big happy family with creative freedoms and great benefits. It sounded like a dream come true, the sort of once in a lifetime chance you just can't pass up. Reluctantly Liesel skipped her classes that Friday and attended their auditions, passing through each phase with flying colors. Within a few weeks, she was signing her contract and abandoning school to focus on training full time.

At first everything was so perfect as the trainers and staff showered her and other fellow trainees with tasty meals, wise advice, and supportiveness. Only a few months after training did the CEO call a meeting to announce that she was picked as part of the lineup for a four member co-ed group called NOVA, often stylized as NOV4, that would become the company's newest experiment. Once again she faced her worst fears of failure, pleading with her boss to give her more time to train. She wasn't ready, wasn't yet refined enough to grace the stage. Her fate had already been decided though. She was going to debut whether she liked it or not.

Liesel, using the stage name Lili, would meet her new groupmates as they all moved into a tiny nearly closet-sized dorm much too far away from the company building or any of the popular stage performance sets. Two girls and two boys were now crammed together as they went from total strangers to sharing everything and anything. There was only one bedroom in their dorm, deciding amongst themselves that every week they would switch from girls in the room and boys in the living room then vice versa. Their strict "diet" commanded of them that they eat less than 1,000 calories a day, yet the company withheld payments to "recoup investment" from their lackluster training and recording costs. as such, it was common to skip meals or share measly portions amongst themselves per day.

Liesel's heart ached to watch her groupmates struggle and starve, secretly doing whatever she could to ensure that the others were receiving as much support and comfort as possible. She began sneakily giving her food portions into their meals, ignoring her grumbling twisting stomach and hitting the gym or practicing choreographies to distract from the pain. Often times she would insist that she sleep on the cold hard wood floor just so that her fellow female member could sleep on their small futon without having to rub shoulders with Liesel. What meager earnings she managed to get from the company were solely spent on healthy food she could budget for the others to eat or a special day where she could treat them to a small but tasty meal at the pojangmacha vendors.

chapter four

trigger warning: mention of depression.

Despite their struggles behind the scenes, the group never forgot why they were there and how hard they had to work for the sake of their budding careers. Once releasing their first single and promoting nonstop for months, NOV4 were finally catching the eyes of curious fans who loved their concept and the great lengths they would go to interact with their fanbase affectionately named Comets. They were swiftly becoming the most popular idols of their agency as they released a successful first album, won stages, their hit songs climbing up the charts, and announced a national tour in 2020. Everything seemed to be looking up and the four hoped their hard work would be rewarded not only with the support of their Comets, but finally receiving paychecks from the millions they were earning through sales.

All that glittered was not gold though. After completing their tour and preparing to release another album in 2021, they noticed that their payment was hardly bigger than the low income crumbs of cash they'd received previously as brand new rookies. Liesel gathered her mates and calculated everything, realizing that something wasn't adding up. It was no secret that their CEO was a greedy pig who was frugal with his spending lest it be for expensive trips to Las Vegas or fancy dinners while the rest of the employees scraped the barrel to survive. With what little courage she had to stand up for the ones she cared so much for, had paid in blood sweat and tears to protect, Liesel convinced the rest of NOV4 to go on strike. They halted all activities and work, demanding that the agency properly pay them the earnings they deserved and were agreed upon in their contracts.

As the company's stock value dropped due to their strike and fans began to express outrage at the many delays in their comeback as well as radio silence from the company, the four thought they would finally get what they wanted. Instead, much to their dismay, they were only further punished. Suddenly their manager and company staff were ignoring them, letting Liesel and her mates fizzle back into obscurity while they paid extra attention to newer trainees. The checks stopped coming altogether as they and their fans were left completely in the dark about where they stood as a rapidly inactive group with their latest album being held hostage by the agency.

Finally they got their answers in the form of contract termination as the agency posted an official public statement that they had gone bankrupt, were shutting the company down, and all idols under their management would be disbanded. There was no meeting or discussion of severance pay. Only waking up to seeing the news online when thousands of fans tagged their social media begging for a better explanation. Almost overnight, NOV4 was torn apart and their short four year tenure as idols came to a harsh end. Liesel entered a deep depression as she walked away from the life she hoped would be everything she dreamt of.

Since then she returned to university to resume fashion studies and managed to find lucrative gigs as a model and influencer. The one thing that gets her through the days is the connection she has with the fans who continued to follow and support her despite retiring from idol life, engaging daily with her Liemons as she calls them and relearning how to smile authentically. She now works hard on improving her mental health and living a life for herself so that she never again doubts her worth.
