BACKGROUND. jang yunho's life isn't anything to write home about, really. not at first. he's a child when he discovers dance; it becomes his entire life; it consumes him, so long as it is allowed to do so. it occupies all of his free time, isolates him from others. 

 

and then he meets youngjoon. 

 

they're in high school. yunho's a couple years ahead of youngjoon, but they have a couple random classes together. youngjoon is everything yunho can't be and everything yunho needs to keep him balanced, and youngjoon is the first person to draw yunho's attention away from dance for longer than a passing moment. slowly, at some point, things shift. it's no longer dance that takes all of yunho's time. he's made time for youngjoon, too. 

 

young love, as it turns out, is just as all-consuming and terrifying as yunho's love for the artform. yunho loves youngjoon, he does. 

 

but yunho's a kid. 

 

and yunho doesn't know what he's doing. 

 

and when he decides he's going to new york to study dance after graduation, yunho makes a decision that will haunt him for a lifetime. 

 

he thinks he's doing the right thing. he doesn't think it's fair, to himself or to youngjoon, to try and test them with the strain of a long distance relationship when yunho knows he'll be busy and won't have time. and youngjoon's still in high school, can't follow him, even if he would have wanted to. yunho thinks he's saving them the heartache and slow slip into resentment. 

 

yunho breaks both of their hearts.

 

he's too much of a coward to reach out to youngjoon, in the months following his departure, when the wound is fresh and bleeding so profusely it seems it will never end. maybe he thinks he deserves the pain, maybe he thinks it's too late, that it had been too late the moment he had suggested they break up. youngjoon had accepted it so easily — so maybe he's tired of yunho, too, and it was time for them to move on. 

 

the heartache never heals. 

 

yunho doesn't even try to fill the space left behind.

 

he moves back to their hometown, gets a job as a dance teacher but he doesn't dare to even hope to see youngjoon again. he's still a coward, too much of one to reach out and even see how he's doing. maybe he doesn't want to know if youngjoon has really moved on, as he deserves. 

 

he's selfish.
