timeline.
sprouting;
梅花 - on the day maehwa was born, vibrant plum blossoms decorated the trees in the han family’s courtyard despite the harsh winter snow. and so, with hope that their newborn daughter would also be resilient and perservere through the face of adversity, the han parents made it her namesake. and although the han clan were more than well off at the time of her birth, they raised maehwa in a way that ensured she’d have everything she needed to thrive in this world without spoiling her.

they thought it was more important to teach their young daughter other things, like how to be brave enough to fall over and over again, because they would always be there to pull her back up so that the pitter patter of her footsteps and the melody of her giggles resonated through the family’s home. like how to be loving and caring, to stumble on rocks and bleed but to never stop craving the smell of morning dew and the feeling of rain puddles under her feet. like how to be kind, to learn to love the fuzzy feeling of warmth that spreads across her chest every time a wide smile stretches itself across someone’s face when she shared what she had with those who didn’t. they taught her that the world runs on these random acts of kindness, and that everyone is so deeply immersed in their own troubles that they forget how crucial it is to smile.

but, arguably the most important of them all, they taught her how to say “i love you,” and never not mean it.
budding;
the news of the crown prince’s engagement came when she was seventeen. her uncle had accidentally let it slip when the family had been sitting down for dinner. he was not happy with who the bride was to be, but maehwa could not focus on anything but the sound of her own heart breaking.

in the days following, she continued to live life with an aloofness that didn’t quite reflect the vibrant young girl everyone had known her to be. consumed by her own devastation, she had not been of clear mind when her uncle had suggested she visit the crown prince one last visit before he was married.

had she known what the consequence of this action would be, she is sure would not have gone. and yet, if she had been given the chance to go back in time, she is not confident she could change her decision.

love had always been a blinding force.
blossoming;
it has been ten years since their marriage. lots had changed since then. he was now the king, and she was now his queen consort. but it had been ten years, and there is still no heir to his throne.

it has been ten years of nothing but distance.

it is even a fact well known inside the palace walls, originating from whispers amongst the servants that worked for them.

the king dislikes his wife so much that he doesn’t even have use for the auspicious dates given to them by the astronomers’ office, they would say with a giggle, unable to sympathize for a woman who had everything in the palm of her hands. what a shame. i heard she has loved him since she was a child, the other would reply, that she prayed so earnestly to the heavens to have him, and the position fell into her lap after the death of his one true love. everything but his love.

In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.

my dearest,
My husband, I think writing letters to you is my favorite part of my day.

I find solace in the delicate act of inscribing my thoughts upon this parchment, for the craft of writing to you brings a peculiar comfort to my weary heart. Within these ink-stained lines, I unburden my soul and release the weight that rests upon my shoulders. I am certain you shall never peruse these words, for the bitterness that severs our connection and your disdain towards me is palpable.

How I yearn for you to comprehend the depths of my remorse, to understand that I never harbored intentions for your beloved’s untimely demise. Unaware was I, that the night would unfold with such tragic consequences, when I was merely instructed to seek your company for the last time. Many years has elapsed since that ill-fated night... the night when the seed of life was sown within me.

Oh, how I wish you could fathom the joy that swelled within me at the prospect of nurturing a child, a living testament to our union and blessed with your benevolent spirit and captivating countenance. Perhaps it is a blessing that that you distanced yourself from my presence, sparing you the knowledge of my grievous loss. While I remain uncertain if the news of our unborn child’s demise would have shattered your heart, I wish to harbor the belief that such tender sentiments might have stirred within you.

My foolish heart aches with an unrelenting yearning for your presence. I wish for you to grasp that I would surrender all worldly possessions to find solace in your warm embrace once more. The final memory of your touch lingers from our wedding night, where, in your arms, I sought forgiveness, tears streaming in earnest contrition. In that fleeting moment, I believed I glimpsed a trace of love within your gaze, and perhaps, love rekindled.

Yet, the truth remains evident – you do not require my presence as fervently as I yearn for yours. If foreknowledge had graced me with the awareness that it was our final embrace, I would have clung to you with greater tenacity, prolonging the fleeting moment.

Nevertheless, I hold no reproach for the disdain that resides in your heart. The undeniable truth echoes that my fervent desire for you led me to compromise my principles, besmirching my hands in the pursuit of your affection.

I desired you ardently, though never in this regrettable manner.

Your Queen,
Maehwa.
