He was an unwanted child. His parents were addicts and abusive, caring more for their fixes than they ever did for him. They didn’t love him. They never did.

He was young when he walked away, leaving them in his past and refusing to look back again.

History, of course, is hardly ever that easy. Life isn't easy at all. 

Yeonjun grew up in a cold, dark house, aware from his first memories that his parents didn't want him. If not for various neighbors that had taken interest in him, his parents might have sold him off for cash to find their bad habits. Yeonjun was lucky in that regard, but not in many others. 

He ate very little most nights, if he ate anything at all, and he slept with his bedrom door barricaded, hidden in the closet or curled up under blankets at the foot of his bed.

His early years were rife with hunger and sleepless nights, but things shifted in middle school when Yeonjun started hanging with the wrong crowd. They gave him cigarettes and booze, and despite the terribly both were for him, they numbed the gnawing beast of hunger and the ache of want. They also made him bold, and Yeonjun began to pick up theft and other unsavory habits including selling his body in order to not so much make ends meet as much as get what he needed in order to survive.

And survive he did. At 16, after years of neglect, abuse, starvation, and a laundry list of other offenses, Yeonjun forced the court's hand and got himself emancipated. It wouldn't erase the years of abuse, but it was enough. It was a start.
