It would be nice to believe that Geonwoo might somehow know happiness without that measure of darkness. It would be nice to think that Geonwoo chose to go into psychology because it interested him, and not because a part of him was eternally in search of why humans were the way they were, did the things they did. It would be nice to assume that all was right in his world.

It would also be wrong.

Geonwoo’s first memory, the clearest one, was one of darkness punctuated by cries.

To a child, their world was absolute. The only world Geonwoo knew was his own, and all he knew was torment.

His father, Kim Geonshik, possessed a mean streak, one that showed most often when he came home from work to berate his wife for menial things. At the time, Geonwoo had been warned to stay out of it. Be quiet, be small, and stay out. And at his mother’s request, he had…up until the evening Geonshik struck her.

Geonwoo had been unable to stand idle any longer. With a lack of anything else that he could do, he’d stepped between his mother and her tormentor, prepared to beg his father to stop.

His father, a more traditionally minded alpha, had been enraged at the act of defiance and had batted Geonwoo to the side. Upon hitting the wall, Geonwoo had crumpled like a puppet whose strings had been cut.

The room was dark when he swam back to consciousness, his mother crying softly next to them while his father slept in another room.

That was how it began.

After that, any time his father escalated to violence, Geonwoo stepped between him and his mother. For a time, his mother tried to protect her son, locking him in his bedroom or the bathroom, locking him in a closet. But Geonwoo was a smart child, and after only a couple weeks of that, he taught himself how to pick locks with paperclips and bobby pins.

It only took a couple months until Geonshik would bypass his wife entirely, going straight for his son in his fits of anger. From that, Geonwoo learned a great many things, the most important of which being: alphas weren’t to be trusted and that Geonshik was an impeccable liar.

No one had any idea what sort of hell was happening behind closed doors.

Geonwoo was fifteen when his father was finally jailed on unrelated charges. After a decade of abuse as his hands, Geonwoo and his mother were free. …but at what cost?

After years of living in the shadow of violence, they were forced to relearn everything. Walking and talking, existing in their own skin. But by the time Geonwoo was heading off to college, he was almost normal again – or, at least, he was good enough to fake it.

But the joy of living free was shattered in 2023 when he learned that his father was set to be released from jail sometime in 2024. And just like that, his world had changed again.

• Geonwoo's mother (omega), Ahri, was raised to be very traditional and lived the majority of her life as property,
• she's a secretary and living in a small apartment in the city on her own, but Geon goes back weekly for dinners and to check on her. She's terrified of her husband's impending release.
• Geon is a full time student on full ride scholarship. He works part time at a book store on the college campus as part of that scholarship, approximately ~5 hours per week, though he sometimes volunteers more.
• He also records videos for youtube, maintaining a series about cooking healthy and filling meals on a student's budget. Other videos get posted here and there, mostly cooking and sharing homey recipes his mother taught him, but most are in this series.
