LORE
everyone is born with a gem somewhere on their body. the type of gem they have determines what abilities they have and their relationship to other gem types. (this is NOT a steven universe au - partially inspired by atla bc elemental bending.)

ruby = fire
sapphire = water
emerald = earth
yellow = air
amethyst = enchantment
sunstone = sun
moonstone = moon
soulgem = spirit

there are four (4) possible states for one's gem to be in:
1. whole - there is no damage to the gem and the person is able to use most or all of their powers.
2. cracked - there is a large crack or multiple cracks in the gem, and while the person is able to use most or all of their powers, their control and strange can fluctuate drastically.
3. shattered - there is no more gem; it has been completed destroyed. even if some very small fragments remain the person is unable to use any of their powers.
4. imprisoned - a punishment usually given to the highest of criminals in which they still have their gem (whole or cracked), but it has been encased in dark metal, rendering the person unable to use any of their powers. this can also lead to other issues such as unreleased power being kept within and causing sickness, mental/emotional instability, etc.

MELO'S CHARACTER(S)

idk their backstory yet but they're skilled enough at earth bending that they can pressurize rocks and other minerals to the point of them becoming magma/lava, which they can control just the same as "regular" earth materials.
