Born unexpectedly to a mother who'd only planned to have one child, Sunggyu's upbringing wasn't exactly easy. His parents were quite strict with him and never supported his interest in music. They even threatened to disown him if he pursued becoming a singer. Even with that looming over him, though, he moved out to Seoul after graduating with the intent to prove himself, but didn't have any luck with auditions for a few years. It was while working part-time in a café that he ended up striking up a conversation with the manager of a band he really admired and got offered the opportunity to try out for Woollim Entertainment. Everything else is history. 

Being the leader of Infinite was never something Sunggyu counted on, but it was what shaped him into the man he is today. An omega in a position of authority wasn't always respected due to the perception that they were overly emotional and too weak to lead. Suddenly, he wasn't just proving his worth to his parents as a musician, but to the industry as a whole. He may have had small, dainty hands, but he ruled with an iron fist! That tough, unwavering mentality stuck with him throughout his time as an idol and still remains, but he has softened up quite a bit over the years. He hadn't realized that many people perceived him as being quite emotionally stunted and he has tried his best to be more open now.

Unfortunately, like many artists, Sunggyu didn't really have time to invest in his personal life. He is well aware of the fact that he isn't the "young, pliable, and breedable" omega that most alphas would show interest in. He's older, inflexible both in body and his ways, and doesn't have many more fertile years left where he could provide children even if he wanted to. To be blunt, he's lacking and far from what anyone would want to settle down with. Reminding himself of that reality and conditioning himself not to expect much in the way of romance has been how he's gotten by all these years. If he allowed himself to hope, to let his instincts to have a mate and family win out, then he would have his heart irrevocably broken by now. Closing himself off to it and keeping expectations low is far easier than risking vulnerability.

Instead of focusing on the unobtainable, Sunggyu has continued to put all his effort into his musical career. He still actively produces his own albums on top of frequently participating in musicals. When he isn't doing that, he's often a guest on variety shows or moonlighting in radio. To say he stays busy is an understatement. Even with all that going on, though, his ultimate goal was to get Infinite back together under one company. It wasn't until recently that he made that a reality by opening up Infinite Company officially on the eve of the group's 13th anniversary.
