the fall: nanami was never so self-important to believe that he would achieve entry in the elusive “heaven.” however, what followed after his demise was far from what was anticipated. nanami's death was slow, yet painless, perhaps numbed from the resignation and semblance of adrenaline that was keeping him upright. he was tired. so, so tired. and as mahito laid his palm against his charred abdomen, all he could do was stand and accept. ‘this is it... have i done enough?’ in the midst of his tireless efforts, he stands to wonder: what was it all for? however, when visited by the ghost – a memory – of how he grew into his resolve, he's pointed to his reasoning. nanami turns and sees the student he's come to mentor, care for, take under his tutelage despite prior reluctance. ‘right, it's for them.’ his last words are not a curse but a encouragement, careful in their delivery, he tells yuji “you've got it from here” before meeting his merciful release. where he anticipated darkness would consume his afterlife, he was instead greeted by flashes of white. when he comes to, he is sunken in sand, washed ashore on a beach without a shirt and in all-too-familiar tan slacks.
