lmao i genuinely have no idea why the admins allow me to bring my discount jujutsu kaisen headass into the rp but here we go ig
Against the mountainside of Haepung, there's a large traditional property belonging to the Lee family, one of the founding families of the town. If you go up the winding stone road, you'll be greeted by an ancient storefront that looks like it hasn't changed since... ever. Inside, you'll find incredibly fragile and expensive antiques, and you'll be greeted by the head of the family. Whether you're a paying customer or not, he always seems to humor passerbys with a good history lesson and some good old small talk, if he's feeling friendly. But what some people don't get is just how does this family make money?
Sure, they might be a founding family of the town or whatever, but what does that even mean? Do they have crazy investments in property or something? All they do is sell antiques, but... who actually even comes here to buy them? Museums?? That's bull, the antique story is probably just a money laundering front. They're definitely doing something illegal on that property.

Juyeon was aware of the rumors. Heck, before his powers manifested themselves, he thought the same thing. The Choi's had their ships, and the Jung's had their bed and breakfast, but his family? All they did was sell old dusty stuff nobody wanted. Who made money off of that? Poor, young, naive Juyeon. He would soon learn that his family did a lot more than just sell antiques.
Every day growing up, Juyeon participated in morning rituals with his father and grandfather. This included touching the head of a statue. Touching the statue had been all but uneventful until one day a young seven year old Juyeon felt something. He flinched his hand and touched it again, but the feeling persisted and Juyeon began to feel emotions he'd never felt before: agony, sacrifice, helplessness. Juyeon was just a boy. Immediately, his father pulled him away from the statue, apologizing profusely to the young child. He was far too young to feel such things. Juyeon would go on to remember that day forever. How he skipped school, even though he was looking forward to the soccer match during recess, how he never had time to play with the others after school again, how he learned what his family really did and how it was his responsibility next to be burdened with. It was all too much to ask of a child, but that night, he began to have nightmares of visions, and to embrace his role was the only way to control them.

The head of the Kim family was found dead and Juyeon's father was missing... This did not look good. Juyeon didn't know what happened and it wasn't his job to find out. His job was to keep the family going. He'd been his father's right-hand man for years and so it was a smooth transition without any hiccups, if you don't include the grumbling of the extended family branches. Juyeon kept himself busy: international travels to make trades, keeping an open ear to any signs of curses manifesting, and following up with known issues and previous clients. Juyeon wasn't his father, but he was useful in his own right. Things would continue along as they always did.
Juyeon woke up early in the morning to perform his daily protection rituals, spending time to meditate and clear his mind, then carefully checked each seal on the family property to ensure everything was in place. One broken seal could spell disaster, which was luckily evaded today!
Following his safety checks, Juyeon listened to the news as he made his breakfast, then read the news as he ate, making sure he kept up with any signs of abnormality that would affect his world. As always, there were things that were going on in the world, but they didn't involve him, and so he lowered the volume on the news and looked away from his morning articles to freshen up for work.
Perfect! Between his crisply ironed clothes and composed demeanor, nobody would be any wiser to know he didn't sleep last night. After a few slaps to the face to wake himself up, Juyeon was ready to open up shop.
First order of business was checking if the bell at the front door was audible from the back office. Great! "Wake me up if anybody comes in for a consultation," Juyeon waved at his staff with a yawn. Yeah, it was actually very apparent that he didn't get any sleep last night as nobody said anything against him. Spirits and curses tended to be the loudest at night, so the best sleep Juyeon got was at work. There wasn't a lot of foot traffic anyway and the important clients made appointments, so everything else, the hired staff could handle.
Juyeon tucked himself into his dark, comfy corner, sleeping straight and still so his clothes wouldn't wrinkle, and managed to doze off for a few hours... then the bell rang. He wouldn't be able to go back to sleep even if he wanted to. Juyeon carefully rolled out of his corner, checking himself in the mirror to make sure he looked presentable, then rubbed his face until he completely woke up and exited his office to greet the customer who walked in..
Just a passerby... But if it were his father in his shoes right now, he wouldn't hesitate to say hello, make small talk, and give the people a little history lesson. And so Juyeon rubbed the tacky little desk decorations by the register before approaching the customer with a big smile. "Interested in a little history about that piece there?" He asked before touching the antique, then, as the history of item surged through him, he humored his guests with intricate details and anecdotes.

Background: The Lee family with the property against the mountainside have always been prosperous through the generations, though their luck in lifeline always seemed a bit short. The family has resided in Haepung since before the town was established and they've served as one of the founding families who established deep trading connections with neighboring countries and provided spiritual protection from evil.
Today, the Lee family still holds great power in Haepung as one of its founding family and the main branch continues to run their nice little antique shop selling ancient traded goods.
On the surface, Juyeon has inherited the family property, alongside the storefront. However, what he inherited was much more than just that...
Curses, nightmares, and duty. Juyeon's gifts manifested at an early age and that's when his father knew it was time to begin training. It was a shame that they had to come from the main branch, his father wanted nothing but for Juyeon to have a happy, normal childhood, but the blood that ran through them bore a heavy responsibility. Juyeon spent his nights after school learning rituals, about their family history, and how to recognize the warning signs of curses manifesting. He hated it. It was boring. But what other choice did he have? These lessons were the only things that taught him to how maintain and control his gifts.
He did have a short phase where he tried to run away from the responsibility and live life as a normal teenager. Youth would do that to anybody. But he would soon realize that his actions had consequences and that no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't turn a blind eye to his responsiblities. It was a difficult lesson for Juyeon to learn, but he was finally able to accept his fate once and for all. There were more important things to protect than his own livelihood.
Juyeon went to Haepung University for Art History and Business Management. It was essential for him to be able to maintain the trading side of the family, and this included the trade of antiques in what was now all of Asia. Between the family business, school, and networking, Juyeon didn't have much of a social life and it was easier that way. With as chaotic of a life he leads, he prefers not to get close so people don't get hurt. He'd say his closest acquaintances are his employees, family, and business connections, not much of a social circle to brag about.
Following a recent incident, Juyeon's father has disappeared and now Juyeon runs the main branch of the family: trading, curses, and all. It's been quite a blast navigating family politics, but Juyeon has been trained from a young age for this very moment. He's no doubt more qualified than anybody else in the family to suceed his father... but now he has shuffle between his present responsiblities while thinking of the future. Life just will not give Juyeon a break.
Gifts: Psychometry - Juyeon can read emotions and memories from the items that he touches. The stronger the emotion, the stronger the read. Juyeon can get a general read of an object's history with a single touch, but to get a more detailed reading, he has to really tune in and focus on what he's looking for. The longer he holds something, the more he sees, and the more emotional value an item holds, the stronger the read. There are some days where he's more sensitive than others where he'll have migraines and flashbacks of certain memories. He was trained to handle it with rituals and medidation, but it seems his gifts grow stronger with every year.
Personality: On the surface, Juyeon maintains a professional front whichever way he goes. He stands up straight with authority and command. This was also part of his training growing up: to be a strong leader. He has exceptional manners and a distinct smile and charm of a salesman who always knows what to say.
Juyeon never lets anybody get too close. It'd be trouble if he did, plus, he didn't like knowing too much about somebody. He's incredibly uncomfortable around those who are highly neurotic because their emotions leak everywhere even when he's not touching them. It feels invasive to read people without them knowing.
Internally, Juyeon is incredibly empathetic and highly obligated to his duty to protect the town. He feels every emotion deeply and if it weren't for his daily rituals and meditation, he wouldn't understand how to cope with everything he's felt. Everything he touches engraves itself in him. There's a sense of loneliness he feels not being able to express just how big of a burden that is when he's just a man. Juyeon, at his deepest, is lonely and self-sacrificing. There are so many responsibilities on his shoulders and, now with his father gone, nobody to share them with. Someday, hopefully, Juyeon is able to learn how to share his burden with others. And someday, hopefully, he won't feel so alone anymore.

Requirement: Must be sensitive to the supernatural and more experienced (in life, at least) than Juyeon
Connection: The High Priestess acts as a guide to Juyeon. They're someone a little older, a little more experienced, and, perhaps, a little mysterious. It's difficult for Juyeon to find someone who understands his circumstances. And to find someone who can guide him? Even more so. In the absense of his father, The High Priestess is someone Juyeon goes to when he needs guidance, but, if he's to be honest, he isn't too sure he can trust her.

Requirements: Either involved in Antique Trading or Spirits & Curses.
Connection: Despite Juyeon's flawless execution of running the family in his father's absence, there are still those in the family who doubt him and, perhaps, willing to sabotage him in any way they can. In comes The Devil who dangles offers that are too good to be true right in front of him. Sure, Juyeon is strong right now, but The Devil knows that Juyeon is just one bad day away from making a deal with The Devil.

Requirements: Female, Age 24-30
Optional: Curse Manipulation
Connection: Reading energy like Juyeon isn't the only form of special gifts. There are those who can see without touch and those who can manipulate as well. Although these are gifts that are passed down Juyeon's family bloodline, they aren't exclusive to the family and often manifest in strange ways. Perhaps the most burdensome example would be in curse manipulation. To those untrained, this was a dangerous ability to have and those who couldn't control their abilities were shunned from society in fear they would spread disaster. Because of this, there have been many splits in the family: those who against curse manipulation, those who want to exploit curse manipulation, and those who simply see it as one of the many tools of the trade.
The Moon was someone who appeared in Juyeon's life about ten years ago. She was beautiful and mysterious and unlike anybody before her, she understood the burden Juyeon carried on his shoulders because, like him, she was gifted - or perhaps, in her case, cursed. Without training or knowledge of spirits or curses, The Moon's abilities manifested in a fashion where she absorbed curses without the ability to cleanse or redirect the energy and so disaster followed her every which way she stepped. Aside from Juyeon, there was nobody who could have known the burdens she carried, so he carried them with her.
But all Juyeon could do for her was share her burden. He didn't have the ability to save her, so perhaps she took it as betrayal when a disgraced and disowned branch of the family, who saw potential in her abilities as a tool, decided they could take her as a desciple. Until this day, Juyeon still wonders if he made the right decision with The Moon. Would death have been a better of a fate than to become a tool?

Requirements: Unfamiliar with the supernatural
Connection: So... a town elder sent you here... for what, exactly? To look at some antiques? Oh. Oh... Okay, so you're telling me you accidentally broke a seal and now you're cursed? I - Hold on, how do you accidentally break a seal? What were you even doing out there!?
Juyeon doesn't even want to touch you in fear of catching your stupidity. The Fool is a fumbling, bumbling idiot who accidentally stumbled into the supernatural world and now, apparently, they're Juyeon's responsibility. Juyeon has The Fool help out at the antique shop and when it's after hours, they work on the real lessons. Perhaps Juyeon has been out of touch with the outside world because The Fool is curious about every single thing and Juyeon isn't quite sure how to explain things that are common sense to him. Sure, Juyeon might be a tad annoyed by The Fool's sudden appearance, but part of him is glad to have someone in his life who isn't completely jaded to this world. The Fool instils a sense of innocence Juyeon never had the time to explore and shows him a new perspective to life.

Requirements: Some type of law enforcement, perhaps not native to Haepung
Connection: There's something suspicious about that Lee family with the big property against the mountainside. They trade "antiques" and whatnot, but where are they getting them from? Are they smuggling!? Honestly, probably, but that's because these items are cursed and the family does not want them to come in contact with regular civilians. Law enforcement in Haepung has always turned a blind eye toward the dealings of the founding families. That's how it's always been and it's worked since. But all of a sudden a new sheriff is in town and wants to crack down on things. The Emperor has safety and peace of the town as priority, as does the Lee family, but apparently their methods don't see eye to eye. Now with Juyeon's father's disappearance, it seems The Emperor is keeping a closer eye on them than ever and it's up to Juyeon to find a way for The Emperor to understand that their goals are the same!
