Under the moonlight, her practice sword glinted duly as her gaze fell on her half-older sister's figure across the training field. Okjin was beautiful, silver reflected upon her perfect features and a stark contrast to Juhye's rougher edges, tainted by sweat and dirt.

Okjin was an object of envy, yet someone she never cared on wishing to be.

(Though surely she had put herself in her older sister's feet, at least once, no?)

Her grip on the hilt tightened before she turned away from the older. "Feel free to indulge to both." Taking a stance as she faced her half-brother who was slightly unwilling to help her train for the night. "Who am I to tell you how you should feel?"

moon daseul held the baby girl close to her bosom. her fingers trembled as she caressed the thick baby hair away from the child's forehead. she resembled her father too much that daseul would not be able to deny she is not his. not that she would ever deny—only the opposite: insist, lay down all proof and blackmail, if needed.

yet her mother frowned upon juhye when she refused to be decorated in jewels, beautiful hanboks and smelling like roses. juhye would often slink around and coming home with streaks of dust and reeking of sweat. her finger tips and the palm of her hands calloused, rough—ugly! her mother screamed; not befitting of the noble lady her mother had dreamed ~~prepared~~ her to be. she then would be scrubbed clean—skin of her body glared red—and rubbed with pouches of scent flowers until she would be worthy of a lady in her mother's eyes.

at age seven, juhye and her sword given by her estranged maternal grandfather, the little black tortoise, was inseparable.

the girl rose to be a warrior, though her expertise in the world of military hidden from public as it brought shame to her mother and often a disapproval glance from her father.
